I know where some of you stand but we haven't discussed this here.

Several news sites are reporting top officials with the SGK organization are resigning out of protest. One article here. Discuss.

  • I'd like to know where the "very, very favorable" responses are coming from because all I've heard is negativity about it.  I personally think that the claim that "Komen maintains that pressure from anti-abortion groups and the recent hiring of vice president Karen Handel, who ran for governor of Georgia on an anti-Planned Parenthood platform as a Republican in 2010, had nothing to do with the decision" is a load of crap.  I am pro-choice, and although I've never had any reason to utilize PP for anything other than BC and check-ups when I didn't have health insurance, if it weren't for their sliding scale billing I would've gone without some pretty important screenings and whatnot because I couldn't afford them through my regular GYN.  I have nothing but respect for what they do, and cutting funding for the mammograms really seems to go against everything Komen has been standing for since inception.

    Yes  Please stick around.

ETA: I have seen some positive responses but they're certainly in the minority. I've also noticed that a lot of the positive responses cite incorrect/ignorant information about what PP actually does and what portion of their services are abortion-related. Many of them claim PP doesn't actually do cancer screenings or mammograms and ignore others who comment that they've had both done through PP. To me, that support is meaningless.

There's a lot of positive feedback on their FB page thanking them no longer supporting the evil that is Planned Parenthood. (*eye roll*) Because even if SGK dollars were going to abortion (they absolutely never were) then unborn fetus trumps potential woman with cancer. Duh.

But it's probably only all positive over there because if you make a comment that can in anyway be construed as not supporting SGK's decision, they delete it. I tried twice last night to ask them a question and both got deleted.

I have more to say about this, but I have a call from 11:30 to noon.

  • ITA.

A conservative friend of mine made the argument that he doesn't see what the big deal is -- if people in favor of PP are quick to say that even if you don't agree with abortion, you should credit them for all of the other good things they do, he thinks they should also continue to support komen for all the good things they do even if they don't agree with defunding PP.

Here's my beef, and it's not one I discuss a lot because it comes off as careless or flameworthy, but here's the truth -- breast cancer research is overfunded. WAY over-funded. Researchers are forced to waste money on things that don't support progress. And while I think it's great that there is an influx in care and funding to programs like Komen, I think it is their responsibility to see the need where it truly is and support breast cancer PATIENTS and women's breasth health as a preventative measure, because that is where the money can do the most good. So if Komen truly cares about women's breast health, if they truly want to irradicate a disease's impact on society, they will support screening programs. And PP is the best way to do that.

If they REALLY cared about fighting breast cancer instead of being a political force, and they received pressure from ppl who are pro-life, they would have a canned response saying something like "We appreciate your sentiments and your concerns. However, after studying the options, we believe our donor's funds are best used (and women's breast health best served) at Planned Parenthood. While we hope you can understand and support our goals, we can also understand if your beliefs make it difficult for you to morally justify a donation to Komen. We encourage you to follow your initial drive to support women's breast health by considering a donation to the following local and national organizations that also provide access to breast exams, mammagrams, cancer screenings, etc." and then provide a list of places like Donna's Fund etc.

But they don't. And it pisses me off.
