SGK restoring funding to PP

Breaking news.

I don't have a link.  :)

Re: SGK restoring funding to PP

  • I guess they came to their senses.

Here's one, thought the story is not great.

What a crazy week for employees of both organizations.  It will be interesting how their choice to cut and restore will impact the fundraising of SGK this year and beyond.  PP is certainly better off: they get the grants from SGK, they make hundreds of thousands of dollars from pissed off donors (including Mayor Bloomberg who held a press conference announcing his donation - and mentioning that it had nothing to do with politics - snicker), and great PR about the services that they offer.

  • GRSP, did you read about the letter that a group of Senators submitted to Komen, urging them to reconsider?  Stabenow signed it.

I've got to say, I'm impressed with how people around the country stood up and spoke out against Komen's decision.  They received an awful lot of pressure.

  • I did not.  I'll be writing a thank you to Stabenow.

I'm not sure that SGK will ever recover from the damage done.  Articles related to their practices were all over the place yesterday.  And now, I'm sure the anti-choice camp will be protesting.

  • Sorry to post and run.  Thanks for adding some links.  :)
  • This makes me mad.

If you're making a decision because you believe that is the best thing for your organization/money, or really, any firm reason, stick to it. This just makes Komen look weak or easily swayed.

  • I suspect that the end effect will be that Komen does actually defund PP because they don't do mammograms.  I think the about-face says they will continue existing grants to PP, which implies that when it comes time to renew those grants, they won't do it and it will happen more quietly.

I think the biggest damage done to Komen is that this exposed the politics of the leadership of the organization.  Of course, some in the conservative and anti-choice camps will take this one way and those on the other side will take it another way.

During the post Citizens United era, I am very concerned with campaign finance contributions of "charitable" organizations that I support.  It's important not only that the cause be one I support, but that they also support a political agenda that is acceptable to me.

To Chymes's point, their reversal seems to further support the theory that this was largely a political move rather than a true and very important priority for the organization.

Good for her political career, or is she done?  Discuss.

It's good for Komen, that's for sure.  I think this fiasco reflected very poorly on Komen, which is a shame since it obvsiously is a worthy organization that does a lot of good.  But their name has been pretty sullied.  I think it was a good move to get her out of there.

  • I had sympathy for SGK, but I don't think I'm being cynical when I say they knew Handel's agenda when they hired her.  Any vetting should have showed her desire to pull funding and support from PP in any possible situation.

  • That's a good point, GRSP.
