There wasn't a new Friday Five today, but I did see this question posted on LJ, and I felt it was appropriate with all of the job promotions, changes, and interviews going on, so here goes:
What is (or was) your college major? Do you use it for your career?
If you could go back and change your major, what would it be, and how do you think you would use it today?

Re: School Ties
I started out as a middle school education major- ended up graduating with a BA in Human Labor Relations- I negotiate contracts for a living, but not labor contracts. I am glad I didnt end up in HR, but sometimes I really wish I would have stuck to teaching. A lot of bonus being off in the summer in my eyes. Even more so now with a baby. If I had to do it again, I would probably either finish the teaching degree or go into a more specialized business profession.
I went to college twice and have two Bachelor's degrees. My first is in Spanish, which I picked because I did awesome on the placement test and I did enjoy it. I didn't know what I wanted to do with that degree, so I ended up going back and getting my BS in Nursing, which obviously I use all the time. Ironically, my Spanish background comes in handy in nursing as well, but my vocabulary has suffered tremendously from not using it for so many years. I need to take a refresher class or something.
Right now I can't imagine doing anything other than nursing. I absolutely love my job. Sometimes I wish I had gone to med school, but if I had, I wouldn't have the life I have now (wouldn't have met Ty, especially) and I can't imagine life being any different. Besides, if I want to become more autonomous in my practice, I could always become a Nurse Practitioner down the road, without having to deal with reisdency, call, or the other hardships of being a physician.
Congrats to both my TTC buddies, Amberley18 and sb2006 on their beautiful babies!
I graduated with a BA in History and a minor in communications, I also have a Masters in secondary education specializing in Social Studies. I am currently a stay at home mom but I did teach in the past and I hope togo back to teaching once we are done having children and they are all in school.
I don't think I could see myself doing anything else. However I also did consider applying to law school.
I have a BA in History with a minor in Political Science.
The only way it directly correlates with my job is that all the paper writing I had to do helps me when writing ads.
Otherwise, no, it has nothing to do with my current job in advertising sales.
I have 2 Bachelors degrees - BA in Psychology and a BA in Sociology. Went to grad school, got my MA in Forensic Psychology.
If I could do it over again, I would in a freaking heartbeat. I'd skip my $80K master's degree that's making my life miserable. I'd do secondary education or business, with a specialty in advertising or marketing. I almost did those the first time around. Then if I still discovered this cooking/baking thing, at least my business degree would come in handy.
I have BAs in Political Science and Bioethics, and I have a JD with certificates and licensing in Health Care Law and Alternative Dispute Resolution.
I think I wouldn't have gone to law school and would have gone through a political action/ lobbying path straight out of college. I was young and cute and it would've saved us 3.5 yrs of long distance, and my loans would have been paid off by now.
Stand up for something you believe in.
My bachelor's is in Elementary Education, and my master's is in Special Education with a concentration in Gifted and Talented, so I definitely use my degrees. I love my job and wouldn't really want to do anything else.
I will say that I semi-regret not having the option to be a SAHM. I have really nice hours and summers off, but that's just not going to be the same. Looking back, a degree in Photography or Graphic Design seems like something I would have been good at and could have possibly done as an out of home business, but I have no real regrets career-wise. We just don't think about these things when we're 18.
I don't think you'd need a degree in Photography to start a business, if you wanted to. That's really all about just practice and developing the skills and style. No degree required.
This. I wish I would have worked in the field longer before heading to grad school. I would have figured out how much I hated it and would have never gone to grad school.
The only good thing that came out of grad school was moving to Denver....
Sadly I didn't go to college. At the time I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life and instead of wasting money I decided I would take some time off and work to see what I wanted to do. It's been almost 11 years since I graduated and looking back, I wish I would have taken some classes, maybe even part time but I can't really complain too much. DH & I work at the same place and he has a degree and I make more than him. So I try and not let it hold me back, If I ever saw a position that I wanted and they required a college degree and I thought my skill sets met their needs, I would still apply.
Maybe someday
I received a BA in English with a writing concentration and a minor in forensic psychology.
I write company policies and procedures, so yeah, I guess I'm using my degree - just not to the extent I envisioned/wished I was.
I think I would have listened to everyone that told me to go for the minor in secondary education as a backup. I was just so sick of school at that point - I didn't want to spend a career in a classroom, despite being on the other side of the teacher's desk.
I'm also considering going back to school for an MBA - but I suck at math, so I don't even want to think about the few accounting classes I may need to take.
I quit grad school after one semester for this very reason. I didn't want to commit my life to something (elementary/secondary guidance counseling) without having any experience (besides 9 hrs a week for 15 weeks--Capstone) in the field whatsoever.
I have my BS in psychology. I sorta use it. I'm currently in a life skills classroom and have been in autistic support for the last 3 years. However, as an aide, I have all of this knowledge and no authority.
If I could change it, I would. I loved psychology, so I probably would have minored in it, but I'm not so sure about being in the school system any more. I'm thinking about getting my licenses/certifications for dog grooming this summer. I like cutting my husband's hair, and I love animals, so why not combine the two? So, if I end up pursuing this, I think a business degree would probably be my do-over.
