Susan G. Komen

I saw they just reversed their stance on grant-giving to Planned Parenthood.  I haven't been following this issue closely enough to know if that's a good thing or not - I would assume it is?

Re: Susan G. Komen

  • yes it is. They took away their grant money that funded mamograms and breast cancer screening for PP, I think because of the fact that PP also assists wit abortions, etc.

I'm not a huge fan of SGK.

image"I've always followed my father's advice: he told me, first to always keep my word and, second, to never insult anybody unintentionally. If I insult you, you can be goddamn sure I intend to. And, third, he told me not to go around looking for trouble." -John Wayne
  • It's a good thing for Planned Parenthood, but I think Susan G. Komen lost a lot of supporters. I'm not surprised they back tracked.
  • It's not technically a reversal. They didn't agree to give grant money, they just said they would allow PP to apply for grants again, which isn't necessarily the same thing.

Basically, they're trying to save face and probably still going to deny PP's grant applications.

And yes, they basically withdrew fiscal support of breast screenings at PP due to PP's pro-choice stance.

Basically, someone in Susan G Komen's PR and media/marketing office needs to be fired for not foreseeing this.

this. it's good for PP, but SGK lost a lot of supporters along the way. BUT.. the reason they pulled funding had nothing to do with a political stance (okay, maybe a little bit, since *everything* is political), but there were some investigations going on about PP that SGK did not agree with, which is the reason why they pulled their funding. PP got pissed about this and blasted SGK and it blew up on fbook.

SGK should've been very clear about why they were pulling funding...something about an investigation about an underage prostitu (not gonna finish the word since i'm at work) ring.

it pisses me off that 9 out of 10 people that posted on fbook did not know the whole story.  (i'm sure *i* don't even know the whole story, but these people do *not* follow this kinda information and just jumped on the hate-sgk bandwagon).

  • Wow, that's horrid (the underage ring).

What I found most interesting / concerning to me, based on what I saw on FB, was the relatively low percentage of funding that went to research at SGK.  I saw someone post something like 24% - I don't know if that's true or not and I don't know what the breakdown is on every dollar donated and how it gets spent, but if that is the case I'd rather give my money to another organization that utilizes it better (for example, I love World Vision even though I'm not super religious because they utilize their $$$ very effectively).

From what I understand, it's actually a little more complicated than that.

PP is under investigation in Florida because two pro-life groups decided to run an undercover investigation and came out with evidence not of a ring but of a illegal underage abortions done without parental consent as well as giving them instructions on not reporting the males, because whether it was consensual or not, the males would be slapped with statutory charges.

The supposed reason SGK didn't publicize this isn't because they were being gracious but because of the perception it gives to the public, esp given SGK recently got a new Vice President who is very very hardliner pro-life and the combination of it all makes it look like they stopped funding cause of the political issue, which it came up anyway so their marketing/media division screwed up.

Both PPFA and SGK have reported increased donations in the past few days, so it's probably been a win for everyone.

I think it's even less. It's why a lot of women I know refuse to donate to SGK (prior to this hooha incident) because raising awareness is not the same as a cure.

This is what I've read as well. I think within hours of the announcement by SGK's camp over $400k in donations were made to PP.

    this is awesome.

and thank you dreamwinds for clearing up some of my spotty-information.

  • oh also, SGK wasn't removing funding *because* of the incident--they have a policy of not funding groups that are "under investigation", so they were just following through.

oooOH. pink makes me happy. i want a pink gun. always have haha. but i dunno if i want an SGK one.

when i took my shotgun-safety class, i bought pink shots. they were 75 cents more than the "regular" ones, and every box purchased donated $1.00 to SGK. i felt like it was worth it.
