RE: Chip in ATM/credit cards in Europe
I have been reading about using ATMs for getting cash and that there are chips in European (esp. France) cards. What I understand is that since US cards have no chip, they cannot be used for such things as ticket purchase (if no attendant) and cash withdrawl???
What can you tell me about this? Is it only for ticket purchase? Or could there be other problems?

Re: RE: Chip in ATM/credit cards in Europe
When we were in Italy we could use our bank cards to get cash from ATMs, but couldn't buy train tickets from automated kiosks. We could still buy train tickets with cash at kiosks, or from a ticket window with a credit card, so it wasn't a big deal for us.
Our wedding on Wilson Island!
same for us in Italy and Barcelona
Ditto-- my credit card and bank card work at the ATMs; however I've had issues with automated machines (highway tolls in France come to mind).
ETA: I'd also suggest you call the bank/cc before leaving to let them know you're traveling. I've been rejected b/c my cc company didn't "know" I was in Italy and also in Spain (embarrassing and annoying as I had contacted them).
Oh, this, I know! I always do this. There have actually been times when my husband was travelling in Asia, our CC company called to verify that he was really there!
Thanks for the answers!

For us, there wasn't anything visible that indicated chip-only. It's that our cards didn't work when trying to buy tix from a kiosk. Largely, expect to just keep getting loads of cash. It seems Europeans in general are more into cash so a lot of places don't take credit at all.
Maybe there was an issue with your card?
I took money from ATMs, bought tickets, paid tolls, shopped in stores, with a mag stripe Visa and Amex. Never had a problem. Like you say, there were some places that only took coin cash, which was annoying.
