BWLO-random questions

Some questions that I've been pondering (totally random)...

When you go to a store with an infant (who is in an infant car seat), is it easiest to carry the whole carseat in and set it in the cart?  Or is there some other way that I'm not thinking of?

For those who CD... we are going to start CDing one baby fits into our stash, so will need to do sposies for a few weeks I think, right?  Are newborn sized diapers worth having, or should we just get some size 1?

Did you wear a nursing bra under your hospital gown, or were you just naked under there?

I have weird paranoia about my water breaking in strange places, like in the pool while I'm swimming.  Help! Surprise

If you have a dog, did you bring home something from the hospital first (with baby's smell) or just wait til baby came home?

Re: BWLO-random questions

  • When you go to a store with an infant (who is in an infant car seat), is it easiest to carry the whole carseat in and set it in the cart?  Or is there some other way that I'm not thinking of?

-Yep, usually.  However, Natalie's Peg Perego brand seat (be warned if you are registering for one) did NOT fit on any standard cart.  So typically with her, I would put her in a wrap, sling, etc. until she could sit up around 6 months, then she went directly into the cart in a cart cover.

For those who CD... we are going to start CDing one baby fits into our stash, so will need to do sposies for a few weeks I think, right?  Are newborn sized diapers worth having, or should we just get some size 1?

-Yeah, I think they're worth having.  They have the cutout in the waistline for the belly button, and your baby might be a lot tinier than you expect.  I thought Natalie would go straight into 0-3 clothes and 1 diapers, and there was no way she could fit that yet.

Did you wear a nursing bra under your hospital gown, or were you just naked under there?

-I wore a nursing bra, but it was like a sports bra-ish, mesh type one (hard to explain, but really comfy.)  I got it from Target.  I have wayyyy too much tataliciousness to let those bad boys roam free.

I have weird paranoia about my water breaking in strange places, like in the pool while I'm swimming.  Help! Surprise

-I think you'll be ok, lol... only something like 1/10 mothers have their water break prior to contractions beginning, so you'd likely know before hand.  However, my godson's mother's water broke in her bed at 36 weeks, and since I <3 my mattress for life, I did get a mattress cover.  If your water breaks big time, it can totally ruin the mattress.  Gross.

If you have a dog, did you bring home something from the hospital first (with baby's smell) or just wait til baby came home?

-No dogs here, but my mom has 2 beagles and Natalie was over there at less than 2 weeks old.  Dogs sniffed her for a good minute and then were fine. No flames for this pic please, she wasn't crying, just making a face because the dog was licking her hand.  It made me giggle.

  • When you go to a store with an infant (who is in an infant car seat), is it easiest to carry the whole carseat in and set it in the cart? Or is there some other way that I'm not thinking of? Yes, it is easiest to put the carseat in the cart, but it's safest to put it in the bottom part, as tipping could be an issue up top. If LO is awake though, and you have a carrier (Moby, Ergo, etc.) that would be pretty easy too.

For those who CD... we are going to start CDing one baby fits into our stash, so will need to do sposies for a few weeks I think, right? Are newborn sized diapers worth having, or should we just get some size 1? We figured we wouldn't need more than one small pack of NB size disposables since Alex was such a big baby. Cori is a pipsqueek though, and she still doesn't fit into our OS stash. Once we ran out of NB size, we used size 1 (since that's what someone bought for us), and just folded the top down to make it smaller.

Did you wear a nursing bra under your hospital gown, or were you just naked under there? I wanted out of the hospital gown as soon as I could, but they wanted me to wear it during labor. After, they have nursing gowns, but the boob holes were down around my waist, so I was constantly worried about peeking through somewhere with company coming. I showered and put on my own nursing tank and some loose shorts the morning after birth. Being in my own clothes made me so much happier.

I have weird paranoia about my water breaking in strange places, like in the pool while I'm swimming. Help! Surprise Most people don't have their water break like it does in movies. If it does, oh well, you won't be thinking about it at that point I'm sure as your mind will go straight to OMG I'm having a baby now. We do have a mattress cover though.

If you have a dog, did you bring home something from the hospital first (with baby's smell) or just wait til baby came home? We thought about it, but never did get around to it. Although H was at the hospital with us the first night, then went home the second, so I guess he probably smelled like Cori somewhat. We did greet Sam slowly and made sure to not yell at him for being excited. We didn't want him to associate the new baby with anger to him. He was great and only wanted to sniff her.

  • When you go to a store with an infant (who is in an infant car seat), is it easiest to carry the whole carseat in and set it in the cart?  Or is there some other way that I'm not thinking of? If sleeping, I should take the carseat in and put it in the cart. But if they are awake or cranky, easier to wear them (moby, ergo, boba, etc)

For those who CD... we are going to start CDing one baby fits into our stash, so will need to do sposies for a few weeks I think, right?  Are newborn sized diapers worth having, or should we just get some size 1? I had a few newborns and size 1 for the first month while she grew to fit our stash. Next time around i am thinking of getting a few nb diapers or doing a diapser service till she is out of the nb size.

Did you wear a nursing bra under your hospital gown, or were you just naked under there?  While in labor yep. After she was born, I did not like the hospital gowns. I had a nursing nightgown I wore and threw on black yoga pants when we had visitors.

I have weird paranoia about my water breaking in strange places, like in the pool while I'm swimming.  Help! Surprise haha. I had that too, but ended up being induced. I was afraid of it breaking at work. I remember having towels in the car in case.

If you have a dog, did you bring home something from the hospital first (with baby's smell) or just wait til baby came home?We used the first towel / blanket they used to clean her off. When my parents visited (they were staying at our house) they brought it home. The dogs kind of were like whatever..

  • When you go to a store with an infant (who is in an infant car seat), is it easiest to carry the whole carseat in and set it in the cart?  Or is there some other way that I'm not thinking of?  I didn't do this b/c I heard it wasn't safe.  But lots of people do.  I grocery shopped a lot (good excuse to get out) and I used our stroller.  Infant car seat snapped into the stroller and I put all our stuff in the basket under.  If I didn't do that I probably would have put the entire car seat in the big part of the cart.

Did you wear a nursing bra under your hospital gown, or were you just naked under there?   naked, but I was only in the gown for like 12 hours.  Once showered I wore my own stuff and wore a nursing bra.  But, I was completely uncoordinated to nurse with any clothes on at first (remember, we didn't do so well nursing) that I stripped and kicked people out to do it lol.

  • When you go to a store with an infant (who is in an infant car seat), is it easiest to carry the whole carseat in and set it in the cart?  Or is there some other way that I'm not thinking of?

I just brought the whole car seat in but i would mostly stick it in the back of the cart.

For those who CD... we are going to start CDing one baby fits into our stash, so will need to do sposies for a few weeks I think, right?  Are newborn sized diapers worth having, or should we just get some size 1?

Did you wear a nursing bra under your hospital gown, or were you just naked under there?

With Noah yes but with Peyton i wore my own clothes after i showered. It was like a sports bra type bra and it was very comfy. I also got it at target.

I have weird paranoia about my water breaking in strange places, like in the pool while I'm swimming.  Help! Surprise

With both kids my water broke while i was in bed and at first i had thought i had peed myself because it was only a little bit. With Noah when i got out of bed, thats when i had a big gush of water. With Pey it was only a little bit which is why i thought i peed my pants.

If you have a dog, did you bring home something from the hospital first (with baby's smell) or just wait til baby came home?

We had my parents bring a couple of receiving blankets and onsies home which i believe helped out a lot.

  • When you go to a store with an infant (who is in an infant car seat), is it easiest to carry the whole carseat in and set it in the cart?  Or is there some other way that I'm not thinking of?

Yeah, but don't put them on the top of the cart because it can be dangerous as Jill mentioned. I always stick it in the big part of the cart, or I wear her.

For those who CD... we are going to start CDing one baby fits into our stash, so will need to do sposies for a few weeks I think, right?  Are newborn sized diapers worth having, or should we just get some size 1?

I don't CD, but both girls wore NB diapers for about 6 weeks if that helps you any.

Did you wear a nursing bra under your hospital gown, or were you just naked under there?

    I wore nursing tanks.

I have weird paranoia about my water breaking in strange places, like in the pool while I'm swimming.  Help! Surprise

I think only 10% of women's water breaks on its own. Both times, mine was broken by the doctor.  I'm sure you'll be fine :)

If you have a dog, did you bring home something from the hospital first (with baby's smell) or just wait til baby came home?

When we brought Taryn home, DH went in first and held the dog still, then I went in with Taryn. We let the dog sniff her blanket before showing her the baby. With Tessa, we didn't do this, because our dog has always been good with Taryn. We let her sniff Tessa, but we didn't do anything prior to her being in the house.

  • When you go to a store with an infant (who is in an infant car seat), is it easiest to carry the whole carseat in and set it in the cart?  Or is there some other way that I'm not thinking of?  This is definitely easiest, unless it's a store where I'm not planning on doing a ton of shopping, then the snap & go is actually easiest for me to maneuver around aisles, etc & to get her around in.

For those who CD... we are going to start CDing one baby fits into our stash, so will need to do sposies for a few weeks I think, right?  Are newborn sized diapers worth having, or should we just get some size 1?  Newborns will most likely fit your kiddo for several weeks, but it's something that you can easily wait to stock up on (and swipe from the hospital when you're discharged!)

Did you wear a nursing bra under your hospital gown, or were you just naked under there?  Not for the first day, but once I showered I changed into a nursing nightgown of my own with more of a comfortable sports bra type nursing bra.

I have weird paranoia about my water breaking in strange places, like in the pool while I'm swimming.  Help!  I was totally freaked out about this too & was convinced this time that it would break while I was in the middle of teaching (my kids were terrified of this too haha) but like the other ladies have said, the odds are in your favor and it won't break on its own... both times mine was broken by the doctor.  But I did buy a mattress pad, just in case, to ease my fears there.

If you have a dog, did you bring home something from the hospital first (with baby's smell) or just wait til baby came home?  No advice here :)

  • When you go to a store with an infant (who is in an infant car seat), is it easiest to carry the whole carseat in and set it in the cart? Or is there some other way that I'm not thinking of?   I take the whole car seat or put him in the Ergo.

Did you wear a nursing bra under your hospital gown, or were you just naked under there? I was naked except for the mesh panties.  I didn't wear any of my own clothes until it was time to go home.

I have weird paranoia about my water breaking in strange places, like in the pool while I'm swimming. Help! I was paranoid about this too, especially since a co-worker's water broke at work.  Here's what I did - I kept a beach towel and extra pair of shoes in my office and in my car.  (She said that when hers broke, it got on her shoes and she was uncomfortable wearing the wet shoes home.)  At thome, when sitting on the nice new light blue glider, I put a towel under me.  I also put one of those crib mattress pads under me under the fitted sheet in my bed so that I wouldn't stain the mattress.  And didn't need any of it, but it made me feel prepared.

Some questions that I've been pondering (totally random)...

When you go to a store with an infant (who is in an infant car seat), is it easiest to carry the whole carseat in and set it in the cart?  Or is there some other way that I'm not thinking of?

I would either put the carseat in the big part of the cart or wear them in our Baby Bjorn or Moby wrap.

For those who CD... we are going to start CDing one baby fits into our stash, so will need to do sposies for a few weeks I think, right?  Are newborn sized diapers worth having, or should we just get some size 1?

I never CD, but both Kellen and Tessa wore newborn diapers for a while. Kellen wore them the first month and Tessa was in them for at least 6 weeks or so.

Did you wear a nursing bra under your hospital gown, or were you just naked under there?

With Kellen, since we attempted to bf with him, I was naked and really only wore the hospital gown with him until we went home. With Tessa, after I showered I wore a sports bra underneath nightgowns/lounge clothes while in the hospital.

I have weird paranoia about my water breaking in strange places, like in the pool while I'm swimming.  Help! Surprise

With Kellen my water broke while I was sleeping, but it started off as a slow leak. I just assumed I peed my pants. With Tessa they broke my water at the hospital. I remember being freaked out about my water breaking in random places too. While I was pregnant with Tessa, since I worked at a restaurant at the time, all of my co-workers (especially my male managers) were freaked at the thought of my water breaking while I was working and waiting on tables.

If you have a dog, did you bring home something from the hospital first (with baby's smell) or just wait til baby came home?

I had DH bring home the initial hat that they put both kids in home for the dogs to smell. When we brought them home we just let the dogs smell both of them with us right there. Our dogs did really good with both of the babies.

  • When you go to a store with an infant (who is in an infant car seat), is it easiest to carry the whole carseat in and set it in the cart?  Or is there some other way that I'm not thinking of?

I put the seat in the big part of the cart.  I get nervous when I see the carrier in the top part.  Our seat said specifically it is not meant to go there.

Did you wear a nursing bra under your hospital gown, or were you just naked under there?

I did once she was born and we had guests.

I have weird paranoia about my water breaking in strange places, like in the pool while I'm swimming.  Help! Surprise

I had the 1 in 10 water breaking before any contractions.  I was in Meijer (like a super Walmart).  I ran to the bathroom, called DH (who was in Florida), and had to walk out of the store looking like I peed my pants.  I also had polyhydramnios, and by the time I drove myself home, I looked like I had been wading waist deep in water.  Some women get a trickle, I felt like I had water balloons bursting (it came in gushes).  It was the strangest feeling ever.  Of course, DH called our BFs (who don't have kids, don't want kids) to meet me at home.  When I pulled into the driveway, freaking out, soaking wet, they're standing there clapping like I finished a marathon.   I kept leaking when we came inside, and god bless them, they cleaned it up while I showered.

Moral of the story?  I survived.  And now it's a funny memory.  If your water breaks somewhere (like teaching), no one will think of a thing of it.  They'll think they got to be there while your baby was about to be born.

If you have a dog, did you bring home something from the hospital first (with baby's smell) or just wait til baby came home?  We have cats and my mom brought her dog.  We just put her down, let the cats sniff her, and they didn't care.  We gave the dog a blanket when we got home.  The dog is very protective of her now.

  • I didn't read the other posts so I hope this isn't redundant!

When you go to a store with an infant (who is in an infant car seat), is it easiest to carry the whole carseat in and set it in the cart?  Or is there some other way that I'm not thinking of? We always carried him in his carseat until he was much older, like 6 months and then used a wrap/carrier. "They
" say you aren't supposed to use the front part of the cart for the carseat which can make it really hard to grocery shop if you have the seat in the back big portion. If I was alone, I would usually put him up front but always make sure to keep an arm on him. If it was a quick trip though, I'd use the back where he could fit down in the cart.

For those who CD... we are going to start CDing one baby fits into our stash, so will need to do sposies for a few weeks I think, right?  Are newborn sized diapers worth having, or should we just get some size 1? I think this varies but IMO I really liked NB diapers because you didn't have to worry about folding them down to make room for the cord. Huggies have a bigger "dip" than Pampers so we like those best for the NB stage. Nolan was almost 9 pounds and we still used NB diapers for probably 3 weeks?

Did you wear a nursing bra under your hospital gown, or were you just naked under there?  I wore a nursing bra but if you plan to kangaroo they say you should be nakey.

I have weird paranoia about my water breaking in strange places, like in the pool while I'm swimming.  Help! SurpriseCan't help ya, I do too!

If you have a dog, did you bring home something from the hospital first (with baby's smell) or just wait til baby came home? No dog for us but I've heard that's a great idea. :)

Some questions that I've been pondering (totally random)...

When you go to a store with an infant (who is in an infant car seat), is it easiest to carry the whole carseat in and set it in the cart?  Or is there some other way that I'm not thinking of? We just take the whole car seat. I think if the weather was nicer, I might put him into my Baby K'Tan straight out of the car, but it's way too cold to do that now.

For those who CD... we are going to start CDing one baby fits into our stash, so will need to do sposies for a few weeks I think, right?  Are newborn sized diapers worth having, or should we just get some size 1? I'm no help here.

Did you wear a nursing bra under your hospital gown, or were you just naked under there? For the L&D, I was naked under there. I think I wore the gown for the first day since they were checking so much, but the second day, I wore a nursing tank and mesh panties for the first part of the day (when we didn't have visitors) and then put on PJ bottoms that night when visitors came. I was able to use the blankets on the bed to cover up when I didn't have pants on.

I have weird paranoia about my water breaking in strange places, like in the pool while I'm swimming.  Help! SurpriseI was terrified that it would break at church, but it never happened. They ended up breaking it right before I delivered.

If you have a dog, did you bring home something from the hospital first (with baby's smell) or just wait til baby came home? My parents were staying at our house, so they brought home the cap that the hospital put on Austin right after he was born. My parents said both the dog and the cat sniffed it and then ignored it, so I don't know if it really made a difference.

  • C&Ping on my phone sucks so I'm just going to answer.

Park next to the buggy return! Then take car seat and place it directly in the buggy and push LO in. Makes it easy to return too.

I did wear a nursing bra.

DH took a blanket home when he went to feed the cats. Then we left her in the car seat when we first brought her home and let the boys investigate her while we supervised. Our big cat can be mean and bites so we had to treat them like dogs.

  • When you go to a store with an infant (who is in an infant car seat), is it easiest to carry the whole carseat in and set it in the cart?  Nope just carried the whole car seat in and plopped it in the cart... if I wasn't doing a big shopping I'd just use the Snap N Go stroller.  Sometimes I'd try to grab a cart in the parking lot and put the seat in so I didn't have to lug it through the parking lot.

Did you wear a nursing bra under your hospital gown, or were you just naked under there?  I only wore a bra when people were visiting.  My milk didn't come in until the last day I was there with Abby so I didn't have to worry about leaking.  I got a couple great ones from walmart.

I have weird paranoia about my water breaking in strange places, like in the pool while I'm swimming.  I was crazy worried that my water was going to break at school while I was working and I'd have to explain that to the students!  Luckily it never did!!

If you have a dog, did you bring home something from the hospital first (with baby's smell) or just wait til baby came home? With Abby DH brought home a blanket we had her wrapped in for the dog to smell while I was still in the hospital.  Once we were home he was excited to see me, but could care less about the baby.  When we had the twins we didn't bother sending anything home.  I am sure he thought "ugh, great two more" once we got home with them!  LOL
  • When you go to a store with an infant (who is in an infant car seat), is it easiest to carry the whole carseat in and set it in the cart?  Or is there some other way that I'm not thinking of?

I know some people put them in a front carrier, but I've never wanted to deal with putting it on in the parking lot. I take her in while in her car seat and put it into the basket in the main part (NOT the top!). Then I just put everything around her seat in the cart. If it's a larger shopping trip, DH will come with me and one of us will push her around in her stroller and one of us will have the cart.

For those who CD... we are going to start CDing one baby fits into our stash, so will need to do sposies for a few weeks I think, right?  Are newborn sized diapers worth having, or should we just get some size 1?

Ellie was in newborn sized sposies for about 2-3 weeks, and size ones for about 2 weeks before we put her into the CD's. I don't remember her weight when she started in them, but it was once her legs got a little thicker so they could get tight enough.

Did you wear a nursing bra under your hospital gown, or were you just naked under there?

Honestly, I don't remember! Actually...I think I wore a nursing tank while I was there. Ellie was born at 10:37am and eventually I changed into a nursing gown and robe I had. The next day I changed into yoga pants and a nursing tank.

I have weird paranoia about my water breaking in strange places, like in the pool while I'm swimming.  Help! Surprise

I'm not much help here, as my water was broken at the hospital. However, if I remember correctly (which I may not be), with a lot of women, their water doesn't break until they are in the hospital in active labor.

If you have a dog, did you bring home something from the hospital first (with baby's smell) or just wait til baby came home?

When I went to be induced my Dad came over and brought Tera to their house. Once we were home a few days, my Mom went and brought the dog back here. I went outside to say hello and spend some time with Tera while Mark stayed inside with the baby. Then we switched and I came inside with the baby while Mark went out to greet Tera. After she was calmed down from seeing us, I brought the baby outside so that she and Tera could meet in the front yard. I stood while Mark had Tera on the leash and let her sniff around. Later I sat on the front porch and let Tera inspect her there, still while on the leash. It went great!

We used the yard, thinking it was more neutral territory than inside the house, since Tera is rarely in our front yard. There were a few sniffs, a lick to the forehead, and that was it!

As we got gifts, especially things that make noise and move, we set them up and had Tera get used to them before the baby arrived and started using them. That way Tera would already be adjusted to them and not be so overwhelmed.

  • When you go to a store with an infant (who is in an infant car seat), is it easiest to carry the whole carseat in and set it in the cart? Or is there some other way that I'm not thinking of? When I just had Logan in a carseat, I would put the car seat in the shopping cart. After I had Lincoln I would carry him in my Moby, sling, or other carrier so that I could sit Logan in the seat of the shopping cart.

For those who CD... we are going to start CDing one baby fits into our stash, so will need to do sposies for a few weeks I think, right? Are newborn sized diapers worth having, or should we just get some size 1?

Did you wear a nursing bra under your hospital gown, or were you just naked under there? I wore a nursing bra under my hospital gown b/c I felt more comfortable that way. After I was in a good routine with breastfeeding and my nipples started to get sensitive, it would hurt to have my nipples rub on the inside of my shirt or gown-so I always wore a bra. It also was nice to have the support and be able to wear my breast pads for leaking.

I have weird paranoia about my water breaking in strange places, like in the pool while I'm swimming. Help! Surprise No help here. On baby #4 and I'm still paranoid about this. I've never had my water break at home b/c I swear my amniotic sacs are made of stone.

If you have a dog, did you bring home something from the hospital first (with baby's smell) or just wait til baby came home? No dogs here, but we send all of our pateints with any pets home with the first hat or blanket from immediately after delivery. We usually tell the significant other to take the hat/blanket home ASAP and let the pet sniff it out until the baby comes home.

Finally a Mrs as of June 7, 2008
