Recommendations in Oahu?

My husband and I leave on our honeymoon (yes, 3 weeks after the wedding) tomorrow for Oahu for a week.  Does anyone have any recommendations for restaurants, things to do outside of the guidebooks, or shops?

Re: Recommendations in Oahu?

  • Drive up the north shore and stop at Fumi's shrimp shack for fresh shrimp.  So good!  Also there is a fruit stand not far from there for fresh fruit.  They sell coconuts and cut the top off for the water, then will split it for  you to eat the meat.  fun!
  • This is the stuff in my blog.

Beaches: Makapu?u (east side, across from Sea Life Park), Kailua, Waimea Bay (North Shore)

Activities: Watching surfers at Sunset Beach (winter only), hiking (I can recommend trails), Byodo In Buddhist temple (Kaneohe), heiau in Kailua (check guidebooks, near YMCA), flea market at the stadium (Wednesday, Saturday & Sunday), sunset cruise on the white catamaran with a blue and white sail that leaves from behind the Outrigger Waikiki.

Restaurants: Duke?s (I prefer the bar menu), House Without a Key, Orchids & La Mer at the Halekulani, Kona Pizza in Hawaii Kai, Ezogiku (noodles in Waikiki), Indigo (Chinatown), Diamond Head Market & Grill (casual local food, on Monsarrat between Kapiolani Park & the entrance to Diamond Head), Wailana Coffee House for breakfast (near Hilton Hawaiian Village), Teddy's Bigger Burgers in Kailua and Waikiki.

  • I definitely second stopping at Fumi's for some fresh shrimp. So good! We ate there twice.

I fell in love with the North Shore, even though we stayed on Waikiki. Definitely check out some of the beaches up there. Our fave was Sunset Beach--dead in the summer; we were about the only people there in the morning. In the winter, surf season, it does get busier. Also on the North Shore, stop by Ted's for some awesome dessert and drive through Hale'iwa, a cute surfer town that is uncommercialized and the opposite of the Waikiki area. Also, Turtle Bay Resort up on the North Shore does have public beach access and the resort area there is very nice.

I also recommend Duke's for dining. It's the best fish I've ever had! For a nicer dinner, we enjoyed the Beach House at the Moana Surfrider Hotel. We also liked Sarento's at the Ilikai Hotel for some good Italian food and some awesome views (it's on the 30th floor).

As far as excursions, we did a catamaran ride that was fun. A bunch of different companies pick up right on Waikiki. We did the Na Hoku II and enjoyed it. They do a sunset cruise that gets booked almost every night. I would also suggest hiking Diamond Head. It isn't a very difficult hike but the views at the top (and along the way) are very pretty. If you're into shopping while there, the Ala Moana Shopping Center is my recommendation. The main drags in Waikiki have lots of stores, but most are high end (think Gucci, Prada, etc. Way out of my price range at least!) It is a neat area to walk around though, and it was fun to see all the other hotels.

We had a blast on our Oahu HM! I am jealous you're going. I want to go back :(
