Rome hotels - $300USD range

DH and I are off to Rome in September after our Med. cruise and I am getting flustered trying to find a hotel.  After reading the Waldorf Astoria post below, I checked it out and I cannot see spending $700/nt.  Does anyone have any other recommendations in the $300USD range?  We would like to be in a central section.  We have never traveled internationally and I am a bit skittish right now, so bare with me =)

Re: Rome hotels - $300USD range

  • We had a very difficult time finding a reasonably priced hotel in Rome, so we got an apartment and paid about half of what we would have spent on a hotel.  We used Rome city apartments and were about 100 yds from the Pantheon.

Another option would be priceline (though I've never looked at what is available in Rome through them).

  • Wow, $300 still seems like a lot to me. We traveled with kids so we also got an apartment through vrbo.com on the Campo de Fiori.

  • The Waldorf Astoria (Cavalieri) was definitely in your price range for our dates (early July).  I wonder what's up. I know we did get a discount bc of special pricing they were offering but a deluxe garden room was 216?.
  • I had a lot of luck finding an apartment to rent at www.vrbo.com- very affordable and beautiful.  We found one overlooking the Colosseum.  http://www.vrbo.com/98883. There are several to chose from.  You might also want to try www.homeaway.com.  You can get a lot for your money and feel that you are one of the locals.  It is worth a gander.
  • We rented an apartment last time - Navona Gallery Suites and loved it.  I think they had a 2-3 night minimum.  Can't remember for sure.  The location was the best.  We have been to Rome 3x and this was the best location.  There were tons of cafe's right on the street outside our apartment and the piazza was always hopping at night and only a minute walk away.  We also stayed in the past at Hotel Barberini. That was a pretty good location too and there was a metro stop right there.
  • Another recommendation for renting an apartment versus a hotel room. We used www.rentalinrome.com per the advice of one of my co-workers. The apartment was beautiful, recently renovated, and in a great location just steps away from Campo de 'Fiori. I think we paid around $150 per night.
  • Another one for an apartment!  We had a great little studio just up from the Colosseum for 450E for 6 nights that we found on Tripadvisor.  With even half of your budget you could get a great place and have a fantastic Roman experience!!
  • i just got back last night. we stayed at the albergo del senato (overlooks pantheon). not sure about what part of september you're going so check their website.
