A Somewhat Dumb Complaint Only a Woman Would Make

I had a business lunch today at a nice local restaurant.  I was totally planning to order a salad, but I decided against it because I was with a man.  Had I been with a woman, I definitely would have ordered one.  So after I ordered my meal, the pasta special of the day, the man ordered a salad.  My food was good, but I would have enjoyed a salad more.  I realize my decision of food was based on the stereotype that the man would order a steak or something like that, and that I shouldn't look like a wimpy eater in front of a business person.  Next time, I'll have to remind myself that I should just get what I want regardless, but it's just strange that my brain worked this way (or maybe society taught it to).

  • That's a little strange. I don't think I've ever thought that way. My only thought is to not order the most expensive thing on the menu. Sorry your lunch was a bust.

  • Neptoon I think you are channeling my Dh. Periodically he wants a salad and says that he feels "judged" when ordering one because of the stereotype that he should eat a "manly" meal.* especially in his current office that is mostly joking women.

But I agree with you I feel like societal influences have made me do things that I normally wouldn't do. Then I'm irritated at myself for not doing what I want.

  • I don't think I've ever thought of ordering food based on anything other than what I was in the mood for (and that wouldn't make a mess [no pasta on a first date] or give me bad breath [also first date concern]) and price. Putting gender stereotyping on food just seems ridiculous to me.

  • I've let the gender of who I was eating with influence what I've ordered many times, but my thinking is usually the exact opposite. When I'm eating with a male I think I should order a salad or something small/healthy so he doesn't think I'm a total cow, but when I'm with a female I'll get whatever I want.

    This is me exactly!
