Thoughts on shooting in BX?

An 18yr old was chased and killed by a narcotics unit in Bronx off East 229.  What the papers FAIL to mention is that is the projects.  It happened at dismissal time of my BFF's school which is across the street from the building, and down the road from DH's firehouse.

We are siding with the officers.

Thoughts?!

  • I don't know the whole story but from what I understand he was chased into his home and no gun was found. I don't understand what him living in the projects has to do with this.

  • Why were they chasing him? What was the crime?

I am not going to speculate on what happened, I assume that the officer felt he was in danger and believed that the suspect was armed. There was a struggle and the officer did what he was trained to do in that case.

    BUT

I don't know WTF the projects has to do with anything. People in the 'burbs are plenty fuucked up too.

Thanks for posting article Margie. I agree with you! The cop needed to make a split second decision. If the young man was innocent why did he run?

He had drugs on him, the articles say that he was flushing them when he was shot.

  • Woops I missed that part.

  • I mentioned the projects because the papers failed to mention this.  That precinct and area has a higher crime rate then the rest of NYC.  It is known for the crime, etc, in that building.  Now anyone entering it to help ( PD, EMT, FD) will have to watch out for retaliation.  Usually batteries through out windows at their heads, it's said that that is the norm.

Yes, I know what the projects are.  I still don't get your point.  BUT everyone has the right to an opinion.

  • Just to clear it up, it was a private home and the kid was shot in the bathroom of his house. So tell your husband he will be ok and there shouldn't be any airmail. Also, airmail is when things get thrown off roofs or out windows happens all the time and it's usually a tall building not just a housing project and it doesn't only occurs where there was a police involved shooting ETA: the closest housing development is 2 miles south on white plains road and gun hill rd or about 4 miles east - the edenwald houses

That may be the norm but it is widespread and not just limited to one area of the Bronx, nor is that enough information to make me "side with the police." Many public servants put their lives on the line every day to help people of all walks of life, even the ones in public housing. I'm pretty sure that's what they promise to do.

PS Google the address. This is the nicest project I've ever seen. You know "It is known for the crime, etc, in that building"...

  • My gradfather, Detective Edgar Lewis, was an officer who was shot in the line of duty by a well-known drug dealer. So trust me, I value anyone in that position.

I just felt that when you pointed out that the the teen lived in the projects (which I guess he doesn't) and then said "...you were siding with the police officer..." it sounded as if you were stereotyping. Everyone in the projects is not BAD.  We have sons that will be teenagers too one day. This is a tragedy no matter what happened.

  • I apologize if it came off as stereotyping.

Edenwald is not the projects I was talking about. There are many closer to that and right across from the 47.

I am half bitter since DH is injured thanks to people wanted to "blow up" their house by filling a room of propane tanks and setting a fire, so essentially lighting a bomb that DH had to go into (yes I know its a part of his job) but now his shoulder is F-ed up and from the boiling water, his knee is burnt.
