Has anyone visited Alaska?

One of our close friends is getting a job transfer there and we are thinking about visiting him at some point.   It will be in the summertime, as I am not sure how I can handle the frigid cold up there any other time of the year.

Curious to see if anyone else has been there before and what you thought about it.

  • I've never been, but apparently it's not freezing all the time -

  • I've never been either. But I have a friend (Austin-native) who LOVES it! She said it's absolutely beautiful! She went in Dec/Jan and was able to tolerate the cold.

  • I have not been there either but my cousin just moved there to be with her boyfriend.  She had been visiting about every other month since July and loved it there... enough to move!  I would totally visit if I had the opportunity.

  • I haven't but I will say that I don't know one person that's visited and NOT enjoyed their time there.

  • I was there for a week in '05. We flew into Anchorage and went to Talkeetna, Denali, Seward, and Homer. It was an amazing experience and I think that everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime!

The highlights of our trip were shopping in Talkeetna, visiting a musk ox/reindeer farm, and doing a Kenai Fjords tour that included dinner. We saw sea otters, whales, and sea lions, bald eagles, etc. and stopped for dinner at the beautiful Fox Island. I definitely suggest renting a car to see the beautiful scenery!

I still have my "no puffin" keychain from a souvenir shop in Anchorage.. I bought it for the irony, since those were the days I hung out with Mary all of the time!

We visited in early August and the weather was so nice! It was about 50 during the day and dipped into the 20s at night, and it was cloudy most of the time but didn't rain too much.

ETA: I'd love to go back! Even after traveling the world, this trip is still one of my top 2 favorite trips ever!

  • Excellent, thanks.  I forgot PPR was just there.

Lexx, he will be in Anchorage so I am assuming we'll spend most of our time there since he has a spare room.   We'll probably rent a car and adventure out a bit, too, depending on how much time we take up there.
