Moms of girls re: haircuts

Why did you decide to do it?

Did you do a style? How did you decide what to do?

I LOVE Alex's hair. But she won't let me pull it back, so it's always gross from eating, playing or being sick. Also, when she's tired, she twists it. She'll twist to the point that it cuts the circulation off in her finger and we have to pry it out. It will also leave a twisted dreadlock that takes a good 10 minutes of combing, plus detangler, to get out. We have to comb out the twisted part at least 5 times a day to keep it from becoming a massive knot. I'm not sure if I want to wait this out and keep up with it, or get it cut. I don't know what to do with a cut though, since her hair is super fine with a massive cowlick in the back.

Re: Moms of girls re: haircuts

  • I am of no help. My hairstylist told me not to cut Elle's hair til she was older to just always pull the top back up and away from her face daily to train it out of the cowlick and to grow backwards. Elle's hair isn't as long as Alex's though but I can see what you are talking about already, Ahh the twisting.

  • Abby has had 2 haircuts.  The first one was to trim off the rat tail she had growing shortly after her 1st birthday.  The next haircut was this summer.  We took her and they just evened out her hair and chopped off a good 2 inches.

Like Alex, her hair is always in her face... even when I pull it back she has this short pieces that are always in her face.  I try to get her to wear headbands to keep the hair out of her face. It's such a battle!!!

  • Taryn's had one haircut, and I think I might take her to get her second one today. We did it because it was constantly in her face, and she doesn't always let me put her hair up (and if she does, most times it doesn't stay in the whole day).

They just evened out the back and trimmed her bangs. If I take her today, it'll just be to trim her bangs again so they aren't in her eyes (where she constantly shoves them to the side so it never looks like I comb her hair).

  • I didn't have Lily's cut until she was about 4 years old. Her hair is very thick and curly. I was afraid to have it cut, that it would mess with her beautiful locks.Lily wanted it cut because she was tired of me combing the knots out every single day. I took her to my hairdresser at the time and asked her what she thought I should do, whether to cut it or not. I told her how short Lily wanted it and she thought it was a good idea. Here's her before and after picture, it was right after our wedding.

Lily now decides when she wants her hair cut. She has gotten it cut a few times already. She usually lets it grow in until it reaches a few inches below her shoulders and then she gets the above cut.

  • Well, I did it. On the way to the store, Alex twisted her hair around her finger to the point that her fingertip turned purple and she was screaming. I had to pull the car over and it took me a couple minutes to unwrap it. So a haircut was needed. I psyched myself up, was ready to go with what the stylist suggested: an inch below the shoulder, then layer it up from there. I figured that would be a good option.

The end result is all she cut off was Alex's blondish baby curls. The hair is still long enough to twist, it's 3-4 inches below her shoulder and the shortest layer is about where I thought the length would start. I'm angry now. I couldn't even have her fix it because Alex was done with the whole situation. Ugh! Now I'm wondering if I should just attempt to fix it myself since the intial cutting nerves are behind me.

  • Bummer. I say fix it yourself, if you feel comfortable.
