Maine recs (Bar Harbor/Acadia)

We're looking at a week or so in Maine this June. I think a good portion of that we might spend in Bar Harbor/Acadia. So any recs for hotels, B&Bs, restaurants, shopping, etc. for that area -- or cool spots in Acadia.

And then any ideas or recs for elsewhere in Maine for a day or two?

Re: Maine recs (Bar Harbor/Acadia)

  • Camden or Rockland would be great for a day or 2. I'm in love with Camden.

The 2 times we've stayed in BH/Acadia, we stayed at the Holbrook House the first time (close to downtown, and we stayed in their apt behind the main B&B). The second time we stayed in SW Harbor.

If you want a nice fancy-ish dinner or 2, I'd recommend Michelle's in BH and Red Sky in SWH. And of course, the Jordan Pond house at the park. Yum to their tomato soup and popovers.

I think my best shopping was at the visitor center at the park :)

  • My brother has a house there which used to be a rental before he moved there. As a rental/vacation home he created a website to help his friends know what to do in the area, etc. here is the link http://www.tourcoastalmaine.com The Down East link has the Bar Harbor area. I stayed in Camden at Whitehall Inn where Peyton Place was filmed. The breakfast was wonderful. The bed I found a little too soft by DH liked it. We got a cheaper rate by being a walk in late in the day but we went in May (shoulder season). Be aware that June is black fly season. They have a nasty bite.

Lobster houses to recommend: Reds Eats in Wiscasset, Thurstons on the Bar Harbor peninsula.

Recommend Jordan Pond restaurant. Eat outdoors on the lawn (pick a good weather day). This is in Acadia National Park.We rented bikes and biked the carriage trails with a stop for lunch at Jordan Pond.

In Camden we took a trip on a sloop. Lots of fun sailing there.

  • Definitely sit outside at the Jordan Pond House and eat popovers with fresh blueberry jam and enjoy the view!

Other places in Maine to spend a day or two:

Portland--such a great small city--lots of restaurants, shops, some lighthouses in the area.

    Kennebunkport

    Ognquit/York

    Camden/Rockport

  • Absolutely do the Jordan Pond popovers and soup or jam, so lovely.

Also, I second the recommendation for Red Sky, it was easily the best meal I've ever had outside of NYC, and it was very reasonable for the quality.

We're currently on a 15 month trip around the world!

  • I agree with the Jordan Pond rec. Also, Downeast Deli for lobster rolls at lunchtime. So so good.

We stayed at the Atlantean Cottage and it was really nice and charming. The innkeepers were wonderful as well.
