BNOTBers with Dogs

I also posted this on the Pets board, but I'm wondering how you guys handle your dog when you're going to be out for hours at night. We usually feed him a little and take him out before we go, then give him a little more and take him out again when we get back. Is there another, better, way to make sure he won't be hungry or uncomfortable while we're gone?

Re: BNOTBers with Dogs

  • The same way we do it when we both work during the day. FI will sometimes take him for a walk before we leave.

  • We usually take him on a long walk before we go out and another one when we get back. We also try not to go out too much during the week, when he has been home all day by himself already. I'll also try and do a run or hike with him to help burn off some extra energy.

**I will also say that we leave food out all day for him, he doesn't have a set feeding time.**

  • We have set feeding times, and we rarely deviate.  If they don't eat then, they must not be hungry.  Our dogs are super low maintenance as they are small so exercise isn't as big of a concern as it would be for a higher energy pet.

  • My mom is home at night to take care of my little monster, but if it's just me I do basically what you said. Feed her, and then take her right before I go, run around with her for a few. Then I kennel her while I'm gone, and make it a point to play with her a little bit when I get home. She's been kennel trained since I got her, so she doesn't mind her "house" at all.

  • Like others have said, we usually take her out right before we leave, then as soon as we get back.  Sometimes we leave her with a chew bone of some sort, and there's always food & water in her dish since she usually just grazes her food all day.  She can go 12 hours between bathroom breaks, but we don't make a habit of leaving her that long.

  • Our dog loves to be outside, so I'm very little help.

  • We have a very strict schedule for our pups and if we're going out for the night, it's usually not before that time.

They're fed at 5:30 pm, then walked shortly after. Just before we leave we let them out into the backyard. If we're going out for a long time at night we leave a toy for them to occupy themselves with.

As soon as we get back we let them out in the yard again; they hardly miss us when they have a toy.
