I just did something I've never ever done before
Bought underwear outside of the US.
Only knickers, though. No bras. I can't even begin to think about buying bras elsewhere. I don't know what your funny sizing means.
Am I the only one crazy enough to (formerly) restrict my undergarment buying to their home country?
Re: I just did something I've never ever done before
Oh man, once you crack the sizing code... EU sizing is totally the way to go wrt bras! Believe it or not, I'll only buy European brand/sized (although I prefer to try to order from US stores/sites that will ship b/c USD v euro... I know, so convoluted, but it's worth it).
I should add, not in a bom-chicka-bom way, of course, but I'm apple-shaped and so need larger, supportive bras. Wish I could go flimsy, cutsie, but not so much. Especially, post Italy (the carbs have gone straight to my chest and, trust me, that's definitely not a good thing for me).
Haha. I actually think it's convenient that underwear here (at least in Germany) is the same sizing as pants. I will never understand why the US system is completely different for underwear and pants. Unless someone explains it to me. Then maybe I'll understand, but I still won't like it.
And bras - yeah, I'm still confused, partially because I have a very wide rib cage, so my number is rather large even though my cup size isn't that big. I think DH's bday present is actually going to be something lacy for me, but I think I'm going to have to go to the store to try things on because the online shopping I usually do is not going to cut it for bras.
I bought nursing bras at a train station because I came across them, needed them and bought them. I usually have the same restriction but for different reasons. I just never think to buy clothes here because they're so expensive, so I never think to buy undergarments unless I need them and except for those nursing bras, I haven't needed them.
With the size for the nursing bra I just guessed and lucked out. They fit me better than my normal bras do.
Buying bras is so much easier here because you can buy my size in any department store. Back in the US I had to go to a special bra store in order to find it.
I bought underwear once, and it was within a couple weeks of moving here. I didn't know that the sizes of clothes were different, and I bought what I thought was a size larger. I wanted it to wear it home from the hospital... yeah... I was in for a surprise the first time I tried them on! I was so sad thinking that I had gained too much weight.... in reality I was trying on a size smaller than I normally wear. Oops!
I totally used foreign sizing as an excuse to get hugely fat in London.
Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
When my mum visited for the wedding last year, we had a shopping trip at the mall where we spent some of the time in stores trying to find what bra size I was in the States. Had a funny little woman in Penny's, who measured me and told me I was 42DDD. I let her get on with picking bras, fit them on, and obviously they didn't fit. Way huge around, and way small in the cup. She kept tilting her head to one side, with that bemused, "you're screwing with me" look. "I don't know why it doesn't fit you" she said. After trying me in several varying sizes that amounted to the same thing, with a look of surprise she said, we can't help you.
VS measured me the same as Pennys, but managed to give me a couple recommendations for places. Finally found my real sizing in Nordstroms, but was in sticker shock.
Recently I had to bite the bullet and buy new bras (mine are like four years old, and I need something that works by the time I go to work). I bought them from the one bra store in England that I can trust. Funny part, buying two and having them shipped turned out a little cheaper than buying two from Nordstroms.
I've never bought underwear abroad. I have bought bras though. The main department store in Geneva carried the same French brands that Nordies sized me with so it was easy. I bought a few when they were having their biannual sales. Between the sale price and the Franc to Dollar conversion they actually ended up being cheaper than buying them at Nordstrom's would have been.
That being said, I wouldn't have bought the bras if they didn't have the exact same thing I already wore.
I tried it, and then I went back!
I just really, really like one particular kind of Body by Victoria panties (that they don't even sell in the stores anymore), and I've never found anything as comfortable! I don't even like to mix it up when it comes to buying other kinds in the US. I have these weird dyed-blue-by-a-stray-Ikea-towel VS panties that I still hold on to, even though I'm about to get rid of some much newer, much cuter VS styles because they just ride up too much.
I'm less picky about bras, but it's easier to just order what I know I like from the VS website instead of having to shop around.
That said, I bought some bras in Japan once back when we lived in China. If you want padded bras? Japan is an awesome place to buy padded bras. I don't need the padding, but it seemed to come standard. I still have one that's so extreme when I put it on under a sweater, I'm all, "OMG! Look at my big ol' knockers!"
I can't figure out my correct bra size here in Spain!
I spent a bunch of money on some pretty bras at an online sale website. I converted my US size, but ended up with a bunch of too-small pretty bras.
I really like the brands I can find here. I prefer Selmark and Etam.
That being said, I never go home without getting a comfortable undie order from aerie!
You just wish you were the lady in Target when I asked her for a pair of size 14 underpants.
