Controversial F/U 2 (death penalty)
Previous posts included some discussion of life and religion. Republicans tend to be pro-life and pro-death penalty, which seem contradictory to me. Just curious....

If I was not pro death penelty before I was after I heard about that teacher who took pictures (and did worse) to his young students.
Obviously, they can't execute him for that but he sure deserves it
Wow, I'm surprised that the overwhelming majority are pro-death penalty.
If you're interested, check out http://www.innocenceproject.org/ about all the people who have been exonerated by DNA after being convicted of muder, rape, etc. I can't believe that innocent people have not been executed and that, to me (extremely liberal, criminal defense attorney) is inexcusable. Not to mention the cost, lack of deterent, racial disaparity in who receives the death penalty, etc. Not to mention religious beliefs.

All of this. I honestly find the death penalty to be somewhat barbaric. I know there's the whole "eye for an eye" thing (which is, obviously, still taken literally in some countries), but I feel that since we can't be 100% certain that every person convicted *is* actually guilty, the risk is simply too high.
It's much more expensive for our government to execute an individual than it is to house that same individual for life; and like you mentioned, jennuine, the death penalty is not a proven deterrent for crime.
I can understand the emotional reasons that one might argue the death penalty is a good idea, but honestly - I think it's time we left it behind.
