Has anyone done Mt. Kilimanjaro?

If so which route did you do (how long did it take), what time of year was it and if you were to do it again what would you change?

Re: Has anyone done Mt. Kilimanjaro?

  • Yes.  We climbed Kilimanjaro from Aug 18-25, 2008. We took the Lemosho/Shira route and ascended via the Western Breach, reaching the summit on the 24th. Our guide company was Destination Tanzania Safari (Detasa).  Sleeping in the crater before our summit was the best decision we made.  I don't think I'd want to hike up to the top, starting at 10 or 11pm the previous night - then have to walk back down another 5-6 hours.  I have a recap blog if you're interested.  Just PM me and I'll send you the blog address.

  • I climbed it via the Machame route in March 2008 (gosh, that seems soooo long ago!).  I had the time of my life, and I highly recommend it!  The Machame route is 5 1/2 days up, 1 1/2 days down.  If I had to change anything, I would have had a friend or someone I at least knew with me (though all of us on the tour became friends).  I went through Zara Tours, who were more budget-friendly than most but still provided a great trip (10 out of 11 of us made the summit).  I also HIGHLY recommend the book Kilimanjaro- A Trekking Guide to Africa's Highest Mountain by Henry Stedman.  I carried it up the mountain, and it was often more informative than my guide!

  • Friends and I climbed in late June early July of 2008, I think it took us 5 or 6 days.   I loved it!  We climbed with what is now Dream Wild Expeditions.  www.dreamwildexpeditions.com.  Nixon was our guide and was extremely knowledgeable.   It was not peak season then and the guides said the mountain is much more enjoyable then.  We took the Machame route and climbed the Western Breech.  We spent did not spend the night in the crater but just below the breech.  We did leave at 1 a.m. for the climb as it was safer to climb the breech at night when the rocks were more stable.  It was a long day to summit that way but I don't think I would have been able to climb the breech during the day (not a fan of being able to look down).

We made the most of our trip by going on safari for 2 days before the climb  and then spent 4 days on Zanzibar after the climb.  After the climb our bodies needed time to recuperate and the beaches of Zanzibar were great!
