What/who do you use for Taxes

If you do them on your own do you use Turbo Tax, H&R Block, Tax Slayer, etc.?

Re: What/who do you use for Taxes

  • I used turbo tax the past few years, but this year we went and got them done at H&R Block. Turbo tax made it pretty simple though.

  • I have always had them done on base or went to H&R Block.  I tried to do them myself on Turbo Tax a few years ago but got so confused once I got to the part with my investments.

  • TurboTax.  I noticed some glitches with H&R block when dealing with DH's W-2's from numerous different states and overseas.  The program wasn't properly calculating taxable income for his state taxes.  If you're a military spouse with W-2's from states other than where you file taxes, be sure to double check the taxable income on your state returns if you use H&R block software.

Technically, if you're doing this, you need to do you official fed. return as MFJ, but then do a "mock" MFS to use for each spouse for the state returns.  It's a PITA, but the only real way to make sure you account for everything.

  • I've always done ours using Turbo Tax.

  • I used Turbo Tax online the past two years, but our first year of being married we went to whoever was on base because it was a bit more complicated that year. I don't know if the $200 out of our pockets was worth it for us since we don't own a home or have kids or anything.
  • I've done both Turbo Tax and H&R Block in the past, but H&R Block is free through Mil1Source so that's what we use now.

  • We use Freetaxusa.com for our federal and I do a free online iFile for my state.

  • We did H&R Block this year free through Military One Source. We did have to call to get a key in order to not pay to file our state taxes but it was very simple.
  • Tax slayer. Only program that would let us file together because he changed residencies half way through the year and I didn't.

  • TaxAct. You couldn't pay me enough money to use H&R Block.

  • I pay an accountant to do ours. It makes my life so much easier.

  • I use my mom. She's worked for H&R Block for like 15 + years. She works in the premium office and is much more knowledgable than the person I consulted on base. I know they get a bad rap by people, but honestly it's like anywhere else. There are going to be people who don't give a crap and people like my mom who spends her free time going over different tax laws and making sure she knows all the changes in tax code, etc. I've referred a lot of people to her office and never heard a complaint. She has super loyal customers.

  • We also usually use Turbo Tax, just wondering if that was the norm or if people had a different preference.

Why are so many people against H&R block?

I was wondering that too.  I always thought the programs were pretty similar and had no issues with either H&R Block or TurboTax, but it sounds like others have.

  • Before DH enlisted we used TaxAct. Now that H&R Block is free, we use that instead. Last year I put our info into both programs to make sure the numbers matched (they did), so this year I trusted them.

  • We've had them done at the base tax clinic the last few years.  We have a couple complicating factors that make them a bit difficult to do in the computerized tax forms.

Although, I think we may have finally figured out how to properly handle the wacky items on our own now, so we might just use Turbo Tax.  (it's my default, and I think you can get it free from USAA)

  • For entertainment - the first year I did US Taxes, I actually did them completely by hand.  As in, I downloaded the forms, read the instructions, grabbed a pen, and filled them out.

That was a really wacky year, though, because I had income in two different countries, and had residency in two different countries thru the year, as well...

  • last year was the first year I did them on my own (used to send them with my Mom's stuff to her accountant). I used H&R Block and was really confused because I have a lot of investments. H had to help me correct it but it wasn't anything against them. If H wasn't home I would probably have gone on base, but since he is here to help we'll do it on our own through H&R Block.
  • I used Tax Slayer this year. It was super easy and free.

  • We use H&R block because they give us a free double check. I'll get everything keyed in online, go in and sit down with her(same girl every year) and she makes sure we get everything right and then file through them.

I started off using H&R Block; but over the last few years I noticed that the questions were less forthcoming and finding an answer to understand what the heck they were asking me was difficult and I got way frustrated. I quit using them the first time I filed taxes jointly with DH (the year we were married) and had to take my taxes in to someone to double-check what I was getting from H&R. Even though I ended up paying the consultant $200; that move still SAVED us money over what H&R was saying we owed. The following year I switched to Turbo and never went back to H&R because of that ridiculousness.
