HUGE Interview Faux Pas

I just interviewed someone for a summer internship, and after explaining to them about my role and then what their summer project would be to this candidate, she remarks, "Can I be honest?  Your job sounds really boring!"

Background: I work for a beauty company, and it's my job to execute the "walls" you see full of cosmetics in the stores for our brands.  It's definitely not the sexiest job here (I don't get to come up with the shade names), but I'm pretty sure saying my job is boring is a huge no-no.

Re: HUGE Interview Faux Pas

  • That sounds better than what I'm doing haha! But wow! I'm always amazed at what people say and how they dress for job interviews!
  • Wow.  It always amazes me how people feel they can be "open/honest" in interviews.

  • Haha!  I would have said "to be honest with you, we will no longer be considering you for this internship."
  • Wow, that's quite the thing to say in an interview.

A few years ago when I was interviewing we asked why the candidate thought he'd be good at the job and he said "my mom thinks I'm a great fit for this position".  Okay...

    Ziiiiiiiiiiiing!

I'm glad to hear stories like this.  The competition out there isn't as fierce as I once imagined.

  • Sounds like you found the winning candidate there!

We've had some interesting interviews too- we asked a recently-graduated Chemistry major why they decided to major in chemistry, and they said they switched from biology because "biology isn't a real science"... most of what our company does is biology-related, and at least half the interviewers majored in biology!

  • wow. the person you interviewed sounds very entitled and seems to not know anything about the real working world...as in, not all jobs are like the glamourous ones we see on TV
  • And people wonder why they don't get hired...

  • Today I had someone tell me and our GM that they got fired from their last job because the managers were 'disrespectful morons' after he messed something up and another person say the F word not once, but twice. Was there a full moon?! :)

  • a) your job actually sounds really interesting. I wonder what she would have said about my previous job shelving books and retrieving bills/laws/reports in a federal library?

    b)  I've just started reviewing resumes/writing samples and participating in on interviews for other web writers. We had someone submit a writing sample with very obvious grammatical/spelling errors in it, in a Word document, with the errors clearly identified by Word. Now, my grammar isn't perfect (I'm sure I've made mistakes right here in this post), that is why we have editors, but if I am applying for a job where my writing is a critical component, I sure as hell am going to double and triple check my work before submitting it.

This. I say, just be glad you found out before you hired her.

I would have said this too.  I can't believe some of the things people say during interviews.
