Another dSLR Q- What other lenses for Nikon D60?

We have the Nikon D60 and have 2 lens for it:

1. Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S Nikkor DX

2. Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G AF-S Nikkor DX

I believe these 2 lens came with the kit.

I hear on these boards that people eventually want to replace the lens. Which lens would you recommend replacing to, and what are the benefits?

Re: Another dSLR Q- What other lenses for Nikon D60?

  • You need a nifty 50 because they're awesome. I think they're more expensive for Nikons because the motor is built into the lens and not the body like a Canon, but they take great portraits and they're the cheaper options when looking into expanding your lens collection.

Which one would be better, and why?

eta: sorry they're not clicky- on my Macbook...

  • Both are good, the final decision will come down to what you prefer. They're both prime lenses, which will take a little getting used to when switching from your zoom lenses. They're fixed distances, so you'll have to move forward or backward to frame your shot. The 50 will feel closer than the 35, so you have to decide what you wnt the lens to do for you. You may find the 50 too close if you're doing a lot of travel photography. Both lenses will produce great bokeh. It's a tough call.... I started with a 50mm when I upgraded, I don't have a 35 to compare it with. Just a quick scan of those Amazon reviews seem great, I would pour over as many reviews on there as you can and then maybe head to a camera shop and compare them in person.

Thanks for the clarification. I would like to do more portrait photography and make sure I can do it in dim lighting as well.

  • Neither of these lenses are super fast in dim lighting, but you can always get a speed light to brighten things up. They're cheaper than the difference between stepping it up to faster glass.

They may not be super fast, but will it take clear/crisp pictures?

I was thinking of getting a speedlight, but will they overexpose the picture?

eta: I love your sig pic- super cute!

  • If you're taking a picture of something stationary, then the picture will be in focus given you have a steady hand. You'll need to edit the picture out of camera to compensate for the lighting, it will most likely have a very amber tone. As far as the speed light, you bounce it off the ceiling to soften the flash. Good luck, it's fun figuring it all out. There's a photography board that can help a lot more than I can. I don't see it over there <~~~~, so maybe it's on the bump, I can't remember.
  • I recently bought an 18-200 to replace my 18-55 kit lens (which was crap) and the 55-200 (which was decent).  The 18-200 is WAY better than either of those.

And I also recommend a prime lens.  After a decent amount of research I went for the 35mm f/1.8 over a 50mm.

Thanks V for the reco. Why did end up picking the 35mm vs 50mm?

Also what is a prime lens?

A prime lens has a fixed focal length -- it does not zoom.  Mine is really sharp and great in low light, and has great bokeh.

I went with a 35mm rather than 50mm because with a DX camera (which I think is what a D60 is too), a 35mm has the view that a 50mm lens would have on a full-frame camera.  A 50mm would be like a 75mm on a full-frame camera.  Also, I read that the 35mm I was looking at was sharper than the 50mm equivalent.

Yep my D60 is a DX camera. Thanks for the recommendation. I will look into that lens!
