ABU Diaper Bag

I went to lunch yesterday with some of my girlfriends whose husbands worked with mine.

Two of them are currently pregnant their first time and were discussing baby things yesterday. One of them asked the other if she had picked out her diaper bag yet because she knows a gal that can make them from ABU's. It took all the strength I had not to say, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO".

How do I make sure they aren't one of those Mom's?

Re: ABU Diaper Bag

  • Ha.  I probably wouldn't go out in public with them if they carried those.  I could totally see someone getting that as a gift though at a baby shower thinking it's cute.

I think all you can do is give your opinion and let it go.  Like my friend who keeps dog tags on her rearview mirror, I gave my opinion and then let it go.  I can't promise that I won't say "I told you so" if her H's identity is stolen though.

  • What is wrong with the diaper bag? I don't get it. What kind of moms are they? What does that mean? Sorry I have no clue what that means
  • They actually sell purses/messenger bag type things at military clothing that are made out of ABU material.   I don't think I would ever carry one, but I don't see a problem with others doing it.   Not sure I would classify it as "cute", and honestly I don't know that a diaper bag made by some random person would be a very good diaper bag (a lot of design elements go into those)....but I wouldn't judge if I saw someone carrying one.

  • Two of my PG friends here have flight suit diaper bags.

To me, the problem is that men and women far braver and more dedicated than I worked to earn the right to wear that uniform. Those men and women have fought and some have died in that uniform. To cut it up and make it into a diaper bag seems disrespectful to everything that uniform represents.

I didn't sign up to defend my country and agree to give everything up to and including my life to defend my country. I don't have the right to wear that uniform, whole or in pieces. It's not a fashion statement. It's a statement of something much bigger and far more important. It's an honor and a privilege bestowed upon those who voluntarily take on the risk and responsibility that comes with it.

  • I just think it's weird. If I married a doctor I wouldn't have a diaper bag made out a white lab coat with stethoscope handles and buttons. For one, it'd be fugly, just like ABU or ACU diaper bags. Two, someone who altered every bit of their life to reflect that "I married a doctor, and I'm hot sh!t because of it" all the way down to the bag she carried tells me they don't have their own personality, likes or dislikes, or, at the very least, haven't figured out those are more important than her H's career. Buy a diaper bag that reflects what you like, you're the one carrying it.

Now, did I have a pair of sweatpants that said 'Hooah' across the booty when we first got married. Yes, and I was damned proud of them because I was proud of my husband. But I can be proud of my husband and wear regular yoga pants, just as much as I can pursue a career in teaching and not make a bag out of those hideous teacher theme-sweaters.

Smiles, I've got nothing new for you. I agree with dnbeach. Just tell your opinion and let it go.

I couldn't have said this better myself.

  • Yall are nicer than I am.

I'm supremely offended by diaper bags, purses, etc. made from military uniforms.

Far greater men and women than you and I died serving their country wearing that uniform (or some variation of it).  The fact that some misguided individual uses it as a diaper bag is supremely offensive to me. Remember like 2 weeks ago when people flipped out about that video of those soldiers peeing on dead Taliban? Diaper bag... diapers... associated with poo... need I say more?

Personally, I'd point out that it's offensive. I've only seen one person carrying an "ABU purse." I can only assume it was a spouse, because as a military member, not only do I find it disrespectful, I avoid anything camo or military-looking because I wear that kind of thing often enough. Anyway, someone else said something to her before I could. She genuinely didn't understand until the person explained it to her, politely.

  • I just want to add that you can get ABU fabric without cutting up a uniform.   Also, uniforms often become unserviceable and  as long as the rank, name tape, and other identifying badges are removed, they can be donated to charity in order to clothe people who cannot afford other clothing.  If something becomes unserviceable to the point where it's unwearable, then I don't see any problem with cutting it up and using the fabric for some other purpose.  It beats throwing it in the trash.

I am VERY PROUD to wear my uniform, and FWIW, I'm not offended at all by somebody carrying around a diaper bag made of ABU fabric.   It's not my style at all, and I think it's kind of ugly.  But I'm not offended by it.

  • I've always found it odd that I have bigger reservations about this than DH does.  He couldn't care less what someone makes out of old uniforms.  Bedazzling a uniform and turning it in to a purse doesn't make it stylish...although brown does go with pretty much anything Wink
