Orlando and Disney with 22 month old

We're going to Orlando in March to visit some friends, and decided to just make a week long family vacation of it.  Our son will be 22 months old.  That's definitely younger than we would have normally planned on doing a Disney trip, but figure we might as well since we'll already be down there.

We don't want an entire week packed full of activities and want to spend some time relaxing, too.  What parks would you go to?  I'm thinking that Animal Kingdom is a definite because he'll like the animals.  Is he probably too young for Discovery Cove?  Any non-Disney/non-amusement park recommendations for things to do in Orlando with a toddler?  Restaurant recs?

Re: Orlando and Disney with 22 month old

  • We've taken our daughter to Disney many time since she was 4 months old (I'm from FL so we stop by every time we go back and visit family). Theres plenty to do int he parks for young children. I'm sure Animal Kingdom will be a huge hit, as would the Magic Kingdom. EPCOT might be fun as well.

I love love love Japanese steakhouses, so everytime we go, we stop by KOBE. My daughter has always loved watching them cook the food, and make a big fire.

Blue Springs state park has always been a huge hit. I believe they open back up in early march. My daughter has always loved the water so we try to do as much water related as possible.

Celebration, the Disney town is a lot of fun to walk around. Theres a little shopping area, place to sit and look out over the pond. One of those fountains that you can play in that shoots out of the ground. Parks and restaurants.

Downtown Disney. Lot of everything there.

I-drive, theres lot of fun things to see and do on I-drive.

Theres a large flea market in the Orlando area as well.

I personally would hold off on Discovery cove for the time being (I say this never having gone, we are going in a few weeks so I'll let you know if im way off). Admission to a normal water park would be much cheaper and theres some really neat water parks.

Seaworld, this has always been a favorite of my daughter because you get tons of hands on animal experiences.

  • We took DD #1 to Disney for the first time when she was 17 months old.  Our nephew was with us, as well, and at 22 months old he was there for the 4th time (my sister and her family are DVC members).

The kids loved it.  Magic Kingdom was the favorite.  Honestly, at that age they didn't get a lot out of Animal Kingdom.  DD still doesn't like it (she's 8 now) and she's a huge animal lover.  There's just not much fun for her in looking - sometimes at a pretty big distance - at the animals.  There is a small petting area but she can get that at our local zoo so it wasn't a big deal to her.

EPCOT was fun, too.  DD enjoyed several of the rides, and any character greeting or show in any park was a hit.

Favorite meals were character ones (Crystal Palace especially, although the princess meals are supposed to be fun too...we just didn't bother because I can't stomach the cost of CRT!), and the Coral Reef because of the aquarium.

  • I would skip Discovery Cove, it's very expensive for a child that cannot do most of the stuff.  You can do Sea World if she likes fish, my friend is going next week and her son is only 16mos but loves the aquarium and her DD knew the proper names for many sea animals by 22mos.

I would do Magic Kingdom and possibly a 1/2 day in Hollywood Studios because of the Disney Junior show, more time than that would be a waste at that age IMHO.  My DD was 18mos and 30mos when we brought her, she LOVED the Toy Story Ride, Disney Junior show, meeting Mickey and Winnie the Pooh and the character lunch.  But Magic Kingdom is awesome even at this young age, she can do so many rides in Fantasy Land.

  • Discovery Cove says you have to be 6 in order to swim with the dolphins - to me, that the big purpose in going their so I would wait till they are older for that.

I took my daughter to Disney for the first time right after her 2nd birthday.  She really enjoyed MGM b/c they have that Disney Junior show and she did the dine with Little Einstein character (she is not a princess type girl) so we went to MGM for breakfast - watched the Disney Junior show, then spend the rest of the afternoon at Magic kingdom - we were only their that one day.

We did have annual passes to Sea World and Busch Gardens at that same time so we went their a lot.  Both have a decent kids area that have rides for the little kids, and both have tons of animals and shows that she enjoyed.
