"Died Unexpectedly??"

Whenever I read the obituaries, I have noticed that this expression is included more and more.  To me, unexpected is like a car accident, heart attack/stroke, or suicide.  When it says someone who is 103 died unexpectedly, I raise my eyebrows. Really, 103 is unexpected? Thoughts?

Re: "Died Unexpectedly??"

  • Yeah, I don't think anyone should be surprised when a 103 year old dies!  When a kid dies?  That's definitely unexpected.
  • I agree with you. When I think unexpectedly, I definitely think accident, family woke up and another family member didn't, etc. Someone who didn't have a preexisting condition. 103 sort of falls into preexisting to me.

  • Ya never know, it could have been a car accident at that age too.  But I agree, you don't see "unexpectedly" very often at that age.

  • Whenever I see this it tends to be for someone who had an accident or an overdose. If they are saying someone who is 103 died unexpectedly than I guess every death is unexpected.

  • 103= died of natural causes

    10= died unexpectedly

  • Maybe it just means that she wasn't sick beforehand.
  • I agree.  My grandfather passed away in his sleep a couple of years ago and everyone in the family kept saying how unexpected it was.  Of course the man didn't have a terminal illness or anything but he was 75 and had had 2 heart-attacks...at least to me it wasn't all that unexpected.
