favorite "off the beaten path" NYC

Is there anything really unique you have done in NYC that you really enjoyed.  We are going to see "Wicked" in a few weeks and are staying in the theater district for a couple of days....I've been a few times, but my DH has never been.

Re: favorite "off the beaten path" NYC

  • I live in NY, so a lot of stuff I do is off the beaten path (at least as far as tourists go).  What kinds of things are you interested in?

Really, I think New York is best experienced by exploring the diverse neighborhoods.  If you walked from the Meatpacking District through the West Village and central Greenwich Village, to Soho and Nolita, you'd see a bunch of different mostly residential neighborhoods with very different architecture and a lot of history.  And you'd pass lots of great places to eat/shop along the way.

There are a lot of fabulous restaurants in Brooklyn -- Williamsburg in particular is having a moment (and it is right across the river).  Or you could walk across the Brooklyn Bridge from Manhattan to DUMBO and have pizza at Grimaldi's.  That's really cool on a nice day.

  • If you aren't local look up and sign up for tickets for 9/11 memorial. It is beautiful, I went back in September.  Explore Central Park.  Dinner at Sambuca on 72nd and central Park across the street from Dakota Hotel.  My roommate worked there in college and everything is delicious.  Arthur Ave in the Bronx is great.  Mario's and Dominics are great.  We go to both even though my relatives own Mario's.

  • I love to eat so when I lived in NYC, the best part for me "off the beaten path" was going to restaurants less well known.  I loved Chinatown, Flushing, Little Italy.  In general, I remembered really liked some areas in Brooklyn to visit, like Bay Ridge, Park Slope.

  • See if you can get tickets to Sleep No More. Just saw it Saturday night and it blew my mind.
