Day trips from Amsterdam?
We'll be in Amsterdam for 5 days at the end of April, and we're thinking about taking a day trip somewhere. We really like to see beautiful countryside, historical monuments, great architecture, have great food, and just walk around. What would you recommend? I've heard that day trips to Antwerp, Brussels, Oldenburg, Hamburg, and Paris are popular, but Paris seems a bit far (would it be worth it just to see the Eiffel Tower and walk around?). We've never been to Europe before.
Thank you!
Re: Day trips from Amsterdam?
Depending on when you go, Keukenhof has flower gardens, boat tours, etc. It's a about 1.5hrs or so to get there via bus.
The Thalys train runs btwn Amsterdam and Brussels and is about a 2 hr ride.
Paris is 3.5 hrs via Thalys, direct, but I think thatd be a bit much for a day and definitely not worth it.

We're actually going to a little town called S'Hertogenbosch on Sunday for the Rolex World Cup, which is the whole purpose of our trip and I think that will give us the "country town" experience.
I have been to Keukenhoff and it was fun.
I would recommend visiting Delft. We actually stayed one night in Delft and visited Den Hague while there as well. It is so easy to get around by train and using the tram system.
Also, I cannot recommend Bruges in Belgium enough. It is our favorite. My husband and I didn't think much iof Brussels compared to Bruges to be honest. And if you hapen to go there and stay in Bruges, Huis Koning is a fabulous palce run by a woman who used to be a chef. She leaves fantastic treats in your room each day!
With just five days, I wouldn't venture all the way out to Paris.
Instead, I would stay in the Netherlands and like others have recommended, see Delft and Keukenhof. Additionally, I also really enjoyed the city of Haarlam and visiting one of the open-air folk museums (Zaanse Schans Open-Air Museum http://www.zaanseschans.nl/). There is also another famous folk museum in Arnhem (http://www.openluchtmuseum.nl/en/). Bruges is not too far from Amsterdam, but you'll have plenty of sightseeing to fill your five days between Amsterdam and doing side-trips.
Den Haag, Delft, Gouda, and Leiden are interesting small towns. The train runs to all of them. I spent several days in Den Haag - lots of museums and places to see. Gouda has a small cheese museum and cute town square. Leiden has a Roman museun and windmill museum as well as a canal tour. Leiden, Delft and Guda are smaller towns maybe 1/2 day each. I do not recommend Rotterdam - too new.
