Abe's eye

I think some of you saw on FB and on Abe's blog that his surgery went well but was kind of traumatic for me.

I don't think it worked.

For about two weeks it looked better, less runny and wasn't stuck shut when he woke up. But now it is super goopy and stuck together a lot. Basically it looks like it used to. After the surgery the doctor said that there was definitely a blockage and that he opened it. I don't know if maybe a piece of skin/tissue grew back over or what.

I'm scared to take him back to the doctor because I fear he will want to do the surgery again...and put tubes in (similar to tubes in the ears). I don't know if I could go through it again.

I don't know the point to the post. Maybe just to vent about it.

Would you do it again?

Re: Abe's eye

  • Oh :( Poor Abe. That really stinks and I'd feel the same way you were feeling. I would meet with his surgeon again and see if there was a chance of this or if it's something else. If he suggests surgery again, then I would get a second opinion. It definitely warrants that. Goodluck. I hope this is just some minor setback and sometimes happens and he'll be back to good in no time!
  • I know it's hard but I think you're going to have to take him back to the doctor. If you're uncomfortable, think about how Abe feels. Don't you think Abe would want an eye that doesn't stick shut?

  • Oh no Sad  I'm sure it's more traumatic for you than it is for him at this point. I hope he doesn't need surgery again. I'm sorry! I hope it is just a fluke and make can be resolved without more interventions.
  • Poor little guy!  I agree with getting a second opinion, if you take him back and the surgeon suggests a second surgery.  You should be comfortable with whatever decision you make and hearing from someone else may help.

  • I agree with the others. As much as I would be worried and frustrated about it, I would want to see what the dr thinks. I also agree with getting a second opinion before having surgery again. Hope it doesn't come to that and it can be resolved!

  • yuck, poor Abe.  I'd wait and see if maybe it's because he's been sick?  If you notice a pattern in the next week or so I'd call the doctor.

    Hopefully it's a fluke.

  • He goes for a well baby visit later this month so I will mention it to her. I suppose she would have to refer me to another doctor? I've never done this before.

A toddler at daycare had the same procedure done and his mom said that if his nose is running then his eye still runs. Abe had that awful fever virus and is now stuffed up.

If we do have to have it done again I want to do it while I'm still BFing...that saved the day!

  • You can ask his surgeon or ped for another opinion if you feel comfortable. If you don't , then check with your insurance company about who is within your plan and make a feel phone calls. Just say that you are looking for a second opinion. You don't need a referral when going for a second opinion. I've done it a few times for myself, heck I've gone for third opinions often :P
  • Aww poor Abe! I hope you're able to figure something out! Seb has the same thing, but they haven't mentioned surgery yet.
  • So sorry you're still dealing with the eye issue, that stinks! I agree w/ PPs that it is worth discussing with your doctor again, and if they recommend another intervention you should get a second opinion. As Meaghan said, you should check with your insurance to see what they will cover, and I'm sure your doctor would be happy to provide you with a referral. Here's hoping it's just part of his being sick!

  • I think everyone else covered the advice part.  I just want to say that I'm sorry you are going through this and I hope it clears itself up soon.
  • I agree with all the others about discussing it with his doctor and seeking a second opinion if another surgery is recommended.  In the meantime, I'll cross my fingers that the stuffed up nose is the culprit and the problem goes away before your next well visit.
  • I agree with the suggestions of talking with his doc again and seeking a second opinion. Poor little guy, and poor you - that's got to be frustrating and discouraging.
  • I'd say, yes, I'd do it again if it needs to be done.  You could get a second opinion, just to put your mind at ease.  I mean, I can't imagine waiting a bit until you can get him in to see someone else will make his eye goo any worse, but I also don't think that another doctor is going to have some treatment that your regular doctor hasn't already thought of.  If they have to go in again or try tubes, I guess getting a second opinion might at least make you feel better about it.
