2nd Job ideas?

I am thinking about getting a 2nd job to help get us to be debt free. I do physical therapy, so I could do home health and make extra money. But I want to be home with my daughter more. So, working when I could be home with her doesn't work. I am thinking somewhere I could work 7pm-12am. That way I don't miss out on her.

But really is a minimum wage job worth it? I already work full time. Or should I just call it a sacrifice not seeing my daughter much?

Re: 2nd Job ideas?

  • Is working overtime ocassionally at your current job an option? It seems like that would give you more money for your time and more flexibility to not be tied to another schedule.

No, overtime isn't really much of an option. My caseload depends on the number of patients we have in the facility. So, if we are low, we are low. Not much I can do about that.

  • I work at a second job in the mall. My evening shifts are typically 6-10 pm, but about twice a month, we change over the floorset and do that until about 1-2 am. We have some girls who only work floorsets. I know the store located directly next to us does the same thing, so I'd imagine that most retail clothing places have a similar setup.

ETA: In terms of it being worth it. Hmmm, I started doing the second job so I could continue to be aggressive with debt payoff (but still be able to buy clothes and pedis, etc.) after my expenses increased dramatically with a job change. Honestly, I kind of hate it. But I do like to see my CC balances go down.

  • I work a second job two to three days a week immediately after my day job. It doesn't pay a ton, but it helps support my hobbies--and it's something I (usually) enjoy, so I don't dread having to work longer hours several days a week.

Agree with Okla about the floor set thing. I remember working retail where some people only did that. Otherwise, think about your interests. Make a list of "ideal" part-time jobs, and just start looking. You might be surprised at what you find.

  • I have always been one to have mutiple jobs and last year I took every cent from my "part time" job at FC and put it toward my car to pay it down and was able to sell it without having to a balance at the end of the season. I agree that a second job should be something you are going to enjoy though. This year my FC money is going to our emergency fund. I always recomend FC  (I'm biased but I know that) however they are really flexible and although our weekends are when we need people if you say upfront what you can do and we like you we work with you sometimes b/c of the kids extra sports activities and stuff days during the week are harder to staff or we have side projects for people to work on. Good luck with whatever you decied to do though.

I'm sorry, FC? This stands for...?

  • Would you be able to cut back on some expenses rather than bring in extra income? I don't know how bad your debt is, but if it's not too bad I think I'd rather spend the extra time with your daughter than at a second job.

  • I tutor for a tutor hotline a couple nights a week. Any type of tutoring seems like a good way to bring in extra cash without having to spend too much time doing it.
