You mentioned on my facebook post that the new Imported from Detroit commercial was yours-- I sort of vaguely know what you do for a living but please elaborate!  I think all of Southeast Michigan had collective goosebumps!

  • I work for a commercial production company, and we represent several directors. If an ad agency wants to work with one of those directors (in the US), they come to us. They give us the creative (storyboards, scripts) and then we bid the job and the director writes up a treatment (more details of how the director wants to handle executing the job). I do graphic design for the treatments. I also do a lot of research for the bid (costs for travel, stunts, special circumstances and unique equipment, etc). I'll also talk to crew and start putting them on hold for the job. We then submit all that stuff to the agency, who brings it to the client (we're usually bidding against 2-3 directors at other companies).

Once a job is awarded to us, we bring a freelance production team to plan and execute the shoot itself. We manage and support that freelance team, so we're in the office looking over location contracts, dealing with unions, dealing with any issues that arise, etc. while they're on location.

So yeah, I saw this thing get produced from start to finish (we don't do any of the editing, though - that goes to a post house). It's my first Super Bowl commercial, so I'm pretty stoked! The director of this spot was David Gordon Green, who directed Pineapple Express, Your Highness, The Sitter, etc.

  • They had a very interesting political discussion of the commercial today on Morning Joe.  Is it unamerican to not like this commericial?  Is this what the president should be saying?  And can a company who was only saved by the taxpayers be so proud--it was very interesting--even Al Sharpton was weighing in

Allie, that is absolutely fascinating.  How cool that you got your first Super Bowl commercial!  I obviously LOVED it, and I thought it was amazingly executed.  Kudos to you and your team on a phenomenal commercial!  My news feed blew up sky high after it aired.
