reading fail. nevermind.
When quality of life is very bad/painful and Drs. are saying it won't get better, regardless of how long you could survive.
agreed- there's no point in sitting there as "an empty shell" as my grandmother described herself in her final years...she had an accumulation of non-life threatening illnesses (although some were degenerating), nothing that gave her a "short" prognosis. she had to live out her life in diapers, and having people feed her because she couldn't control her own body. she rarely spoke, and when she did, it was hard to comprehend, because she couldn't move her mouth... one of the last things i remember her saying was "what's the point?"

It's so hard to watch someone go through that too. I agree. When the quality of life has gone away, it should be up to the person. When my great grandmother passed, she had been completely taken care of for at least 6 years. She had Alzheimer's and couldn't use the restroom with out help. I was not around her much because every time she saw me, she would yell "MOMMY!" I look just like her mother. Not having the opportunity to choose to live that way or not seems...unfair. (that's not the word I really want to use but that's all I can come up with).
