Help me pick our vacation!

DH and I are trying to plan our vacation for late April.  A little background: We're from Ohio so two of these places are "drive worthy".  As far as vacations go, we like a mix between laid back and sightseeing/shows/etc.  We also love trying new foods and restaurants.  We're trying to decide between three places for our vacation and have around a $1500-$2000 budget.

Should we go to:

A. Las Vegas - We've never been but DH isn't crazy about flying but we just saw another travelling Cirque du Soleil show and got kinda the itch to see more...

B. The Smokey Mountains/Poconos - Also never been to but I've heard good things about it.. Probably the least excited about this choice..

C. The Finger Lakes - We LOVED our vacation to Traverse City and have heard it's beautiful up there..

  • Why are you the least excited about B?

I lived in OH until I was 25 and probably went to the Smokey's at least a dozen times. It's one of my favorite vacations--such a variety of trails and sights and within easy reach.

It sounds to me that C is the choice that makes the most sense for you guys, from the information provided.

  • Personally B because I love outdoors and seeing new places.  But if you have no desire to go, do C.

  • Oh, and I lived in the Poconos for 6 years. Not thrilled with it.

  • another vote for C

i didn't love the poconos when we went and the finger lakes are gorgeous! and chock full of wineries if that's your thing ;)

if DH doesn't love flying, i'd save that for a trip he'd be more willing to get on a plane for.

  • I'm hesitant about the Poconos because I've heard a lot of reviews of people saying "Ehh.. it was okay" but my parents rave about them.  However, I'm not my parents type of vacationer...

I do love me some wine though! I went to Napa last September and loved it!

  • i think the finger lakes would be the perfect blend of sightseeing/wine tasting and relaxing. i was only up there for a weekend but i'd have loved a few more days to lounge on a deck and admire the view! we rented a huge cabin (a house, really) on keuka lake and especially loved heron hill winery. bully hill was good too. i know some of the other girls here have recs for other lakes and wineries.

  • A or C.  My family used to have a summer home in the Poconos and I think they're a little underwhelming.  For a mountain getaway I'd due Blue Ridge in VA or Adirondacks in NY over the Poconos.  I had a great time in Vegas (not a gambler) and there are so many great restaurants and shows.  I had fun walking around the strip and seeing the different attractions.  However, it might be tight on that budget unless you get an amazing deal on airfare.  I've never been to the Finger Lakes but I've heard only good things.
