O's Fans: Guthrie has been traded

Okay, I know I'm a Yankees fan, but I still cheer for the O's every time they're not playing the Bronx Bombers. Jeremy Guthrie has been my favorite player in the five years he's been with the O's and I was so sad to read this morning that's he been traded to the Rockies.

From a fan perspective, it's a pretty big loss for the Baltimore area. He's well spoken, intelligent, family-driven, and class act and that's going to be missed in Baltimore.  He implemented the recycling program at Camden Yards and worked to get some of his teammates to ride their bikes to the stadium.  Not to mention that he's been the O's number 1 pitcher for the past few seasons.

It's one of the things I hate the most about sports when players that are well liked are traded to another team.  There was talk of Guthrie getting traded to the Yankees last year and even that made me sad.

This does not make me excited for baseball season!

Re: O's Fans: Guthrie has been traded

  • My husband and my brother and I have all been going been going back and forth on email since about 9:30 this morning over this.  Unless there's a big move coming that is way off the radar, this wasn't a good move (IMO) from a fan perspective.  He was extremely well liked and a good pitcher for what the organization has been doing.  The two pitchers we traded for will bring nothing to the organization (nor will they take away) but one is 29 and the other is 31; so mid-career pitchers.

I liked J Guth as a pitcher and a person and agree that he is a class act all the way.  He is super nice, generous, and takes time to give back to the community.  Over Christmas, he tweeted to fans about their Christmas wishes and would try and make fan's requests come true.  He happened to answer my husband's tweet and sent an autographed kids jersey for my nephew as a present.  He wrapped it in Christmas paper, enclosed a note and autographed picture, and shipped it.  He must have done this for about 100 fans this past holiday season...spending his own money and on his own time fulfilling their various wishes with autographed merchandise and notes.

I swear if the Orioles sign Manny I'm going 50 miles south and becoming a Nats fan.  I can't take the organization's moves much longer.  Although I don't know much about it, sabremetric's might be worth a shot.  At least show the fans you care to turn the organization around.  The younger guys we're farming are good...but going to take time.  Give us something in the meantime to watch.

  • I think I remember seeing your jersey on Facebook! Guthrie is such a nice guy.  He let me take a picture with him when I saw him walking around behind the scenes at Fan Fest last year.

I jokingly refer to Guthrie as, "my boyfriend" to DH and DH agrees. I think when a player like CC Sabathia says that he was upset with the Indians got rid of Guthrie you know the guy is talented.

I just can't get over what this will do to the public perception of the O's.  Guthrie did so much of the PR for the organization because you knew he wasn't going to go out there and curse and/or sound like an idiot. There was one interview in which he cursed and he did it to make a point. ESPN had a huge series on players getting into trouble with the law during the season and Guthrie was one of the guys they quoted heavily and had as the poster boy of morals.

It's just a bad decision for the organization on so many levels. This off season has brought nothing good to the O's and they're shipping out the talented guys left and right. DH and I are not renewing our season tickets for this year.

  • Boo. DH and I were just talking about taking LO to a game and how excited we are...and how the team isn't expected to be any good this year. Not helping to lose a pitcher. Geez.
