My DD is in Alg 1 she made an A the first 9 weeks. Her teacher left and she had a sub, then got a new teacher. The new teacher did not update Edline often and at the midterm DD still had a A. On her report card, she got a "C".We assumed she was goofing off in that class and just not doing her work, so we took her phone and comp. So I called to find out what was going on, and the teacher did not answer so I left a message. No call back. I called the next day and it was a sub, they took my message, but the teacher never called. I've called now 5 times and left messages and no call back. Finally, today when I called to find out why the teacher was not calling me back, the receptionist tells me that her teach is no longer working there! But they found a new teacher and she started today! So that's 3 teachers in less than 3 nine weeks! Oh, and I can't talk to the last teacher to find out why my DD got a "C". Was she just not doing what she needed to or did she really not understand? And, the last teacher left nothing for the new teacher.
I guess we are going to give her phone and comp back and wait to see how she does with the new teacher.
Re: IDK what to do...
Agreed.
I completely agree with this. Being a teacher myself, I send home a weekly progress report (just the grade they received on their test, a classwork, homework, and behavior grade along with their work for the week attached; nothing too drawn out) so that this will not be an issue for my student's parents. That way too there is no shock when they see their report card grades; they are signed and turned back into me as part of an incentive program we do with our students. It safe guards me and keeps the parents informed.
Also, Pinellas County has an online gradebook that teachers are supposed to keep up to date. It's called Portal. Does your county have something like that? If so, when contacting admin, I would request that the new teacher keep the gradebook up to date, so you can check it when needed.
Good luck, this is a tough situation!

I agree too. It must be hard on your DD to have to adapt to a new teaching style, which may be a good explanation of her grade dropping. What is your DD's excuse as to why her grade dropped? I'd be curious to know if the rest of the class also had the same problem.
Yes, they do, it's called Edline. I have a call into the admin now so they should call me back today. DD is in 8th grade so they almost never send the papers home, but most of her teachers update Edline a few times a week.
She told us she asked the teacher and he would tell them to "work it out in the groups". Then when they did not understand he would say they would go over it later. I will ask the admin if the rest of the class had the same problem.
My DD told me yesterday that the rumor was the teacher left in "rage". IDK what that means, but maybe the admin was asking why he had so many kids not understanding. I will find out if this is true or not.
I do not totally blame the teacher, if my DD did not understand something she could have asked me to help her. She never did. That's why my first assumption was she was goofing off.
You mentioned that on Edline the grade appeared to be an A but then the report card said a C. We upload our grades directly from edline, so does it still say an A now if you go on edline and look at last term?
Like for me, my kids see exactly their grade and what it's going to be on the report card. Even if I go a week or 2 without updating, they will see the most recent update and at report card time, that would be what they are getting (hope that makes sense..).
There is a ton of turnover in teaching right now and I know a lot of you are like, wtf you should call administration. But I can tell you, most of them (admin) are doing the best they can. We just are not getting very good new teachers out there. We lost 2 in my department already this year for random reasons and not like going on maternity leave.. like weird reasons. If you think about it though, companies lose employees all the time. But in the school system, it's a much bigger deal to lose an employee because it affects 150 children. Things like this are happening all the time, especially at the secondary level. You would think with the economy being bad, we would have a great selection but the problem is, a lot of the people out there looking for jobs in education are just doing as a "I don't have anything else to do, I guess I'll teach" type of thing. It's depressing.
Most of my DDs teachers do update weekly and I check. Her only "C" was in this math class. I understand that teachers leave, but when it reflects my DDs education, and they dont call the parents in that class, and let them know what is going on. And, from what I hear, most of the kids are in regular 8th grade math and not Alg 1.
