Teaching Jobs

Hey there!

So I am a certified teacher, new to the area, that can absolutely not crack into a teaching job! There was a part-time position that was supposed to open at the school that I am an aide at (trying to get my foot in the door), but that fell through. Does anyone know of any elementary school level teaching positions that might be open or opening in the future? I would be forever grateful to you for any leads you might have!

Thanks, Ladies!

Re: Teaching Jobs

  • I feel for you. I was just in your position. There really are not any jobs much of anywhere.

I just started a job last Monday that I applied for, but that was literally the only job I had found. I also couldn't find any sub openings, but I never looked into Seattle. you may want to check there if you want to sub.

  • Yeah, it's a pretty bad job market right now. Congratulations on your new job! If you don't mind my asking, what district did you get a job with? Are you elementary as well? I've tried to get subbing jobs and can't even get those!
  • My husband subbed in the Kent sd for 2 years and never got a permanent job. They are really hard to find....

  • Oh wow! Well thanks for letting me know! It's nice to have a wake up call in terms of realistically finding a job. Did your husband just move on and find another career? That's kind of my big debate right now...I think I am going to give it a try and if I don't find anything for next school year, then I might have to move on to a decent paying job in another field so we can buy a house, start a family, etc.
  • We moved actually, he is still subbing. He is heavily considering a career change. Being on call for over 3 years now is really starting to get to him.

  • My friend just got a job in Seattle. She subbed for a year. For some strange reason Seattle seems to still be hiring for this school year. Keep checking the website... daily! Jobs for next year should be posted some time after May. I even think the sub pool is closed right now unless you interned in Seattle.
  • Thanks, Joenali! I will definitely keep my eye out for a job posting in Seattle!
  • What district are you looking  in?

I'm in LWSD.  It took me 4 years of subbing in this district and that includes 2 maternity leaves and one job share as a .2.   I'm not sure if they have the teacher job fair in Tacoma still but it might worth looking into.  It's usually in April.  It's pretty overwhelming but it's good to see what is out there.  If you've been paying attention to the news, you will see that there have been a lot of cuts to education so a lot of districts aren't hiring.  Good luck!

  • I'm a high school English teacher.  I remember naively telling DH once upon a time that "I'm a teacher; I can work anywhere!"  And then we moved here.

I looked for work for about a year, and I tried to sub in two different districts (and very rarely got called for a job).  I finally landed a maternity leave job.  While doing that, I got the inside scoop from the district...that due to budget cuts, no high schools were allowed to hire.  If a teacher was retiring (which one was from the school where I was working), the school was just supposed to absorb the students or use someone from another school within the district who wanted to move.

That's when I gave up on finding a teaching job in the state of Washington, and I started looking into online teaching.  It's what I do now.  The pay isn't great, but I do work from home.  I would think that elementary might be even harder to get into than secondary, but it might be something to consider.

  • I am definitely looking at different districts and am willing to commute (Everett would be closest to me, but have looked at Edmonds, Lake Washington, Shoreline, Snohomish, Bellevue, etc.) I had no idea there was online teaching! I will definitely have to look into that. I'm not sure if they do it for elementary level, but if so, that could work out great. How did you get into that? Any suggestions on where I could start?
  • i'm no help, i'm not a teacher, but GOOD LUCK!

Beyond that, I stumbled across my job by googling "online teaching jobs."  :)

  • Thanks for the link! I am definitely planning on going to the job fair in Tacoma in March too! Have any of you been to it? I have no idea what to expect there!
  • I wish you the best of luck. I'm a history teacher in a high school in the south sound and its incredibly difficult to find a job as many have said. I've been to the Tacoma job fair and its not bad. I found a bunch of districts that were planning on hiring in Washington, Oregon and Alaska. There were some districts in Western WA but not many. GOOD LUCK!
  • Thanks! It is going to be quite the challenge and after hearing from you all, I am definitely open to perhaps moving onto another career until teaching opens back up. It seems like it is always a cyclical thing where for awhile it is totally locked up and then they have a shortage of teachers and are dying to hire more teachers. I'm going to give it a go and see if I can swing something for next year, so we shall see. Thank you so much again for all of your input! So helpful!
