NSOR: ? about PCOS

My co-worker was recently diagnosed with PCOS and put on the pill to regulate her periods since she had cycles of up to 50+ days long.

She just started them a couple of weeks ago, and is not yet on the placebo pills, but has been bleeding for 4 days.

This doesn't sound right to me. I've never heard of bleeding while taking the active pills other than just spotting or something light. Apparently she's bleeding a lot, more than a normal period (well, what she knew as "normal" anyway).

I told her to call her doctor today just to make sure everything was OK, but she didn't. Does anyone know if this is common with PCOS and the pill? If not, I want to tell her more strongly tomorrow to call the doctor.

Re: NSOR: ? about PCOS

  • Hi Emmi, sorry to jump in on this board, I am usually on mm. I have pcos and was on the pill before I found out and never had that happen, however even for people with normal cycles can have break through bleeding during the first couple months of being on the pill. The only thing I would wonder is if she could be pregnant. Also as long as she isn't bleeding through a pad or tampon in less than 2 hours, she is probably ok. But then I am not a doctor. I personally would call just to be safe, it can't hurt right?

Fwiw, I doubt it's related to the pcos unless she hasnt had a period in a long time. People with pcos sometimes don't ovulate, which eventually will lead to an annovulatory estrogen breakthrough bleed.. With a normal cycle you bleed  because of a series of changes in hormones (progesterone withdrawl) that triggers the shedding of the lining.

  • Bleeding or spotting? It may be the pill and the hormones working itself out. It took me a pack or two to get used to being on BCPs when I was on them. As PP mentioned, I don't think this has anything to do with PCOS.
