Cleaning and organizing for move

I am at a total loss on how to go about this! I'm moving from a 3 br, 2 ba apt to a 1 br 1 ba duplex in a few weeks. DH isn't currently around, so I'm doing this on my own. He tries to help, but everytime I ask him which furniture to leave behind, he says to bring it all but I know it's not going to fit!

Does anyone have any good tips on organizing and packing for a move?

Re: Cleaning and organizing for move

  • Haha, we must have posted at the same time!  I just posted a similar question above!!
  • Good luck to both of you.  Big changes like that are always a challenge.

As I declutter, I think, "If I had to move to a small place, is this important enough to move."

When you do move, a storage unit is always an option for things you don't want to get rid of.

  • Decide what furniture you need/want for eac room in the new place - the rest donate to goodwill or freecycle, craig's list etc.  Sounds like you have 2 bedrooms of stuff that have to be pared down or gotten rid of, or put in storage. Start in room at a time, or 1 closet, bathroom, etc.

  • We're moving to LA in a couple months and downsizing to about 500 square feet.  So far we've donated most our books to the local library and sold a bookshelf, reduced kitchen accessories to only necessary items, and sorted through coats, clothes, and shoes. I love reading minimalist blogs for inspiration.
  • I also downsized in my move recently and it's tough. I would suggest throwing out/donating/selling as much as possible before you pack. I made the mistake of being lazy and I thought I'd figured out what I needed once I got to the new place. You have so much to do at your new place, it is so much easier to downsize your stuff now. Plus you might have a little time to try to sell some stuff and get a little extra cash!
  • Thank you all so much! This really helps. I was able to clear out the "spare bathroom" last night, and I'm working on thinning out my wardrobe. The local school is having a t-shirt drive to fund their volunteer services.
  • Something I wish I'd done before moving last month: sorting through all my sample products and stuff I'd stocked up on (like extra body lotion, conditioner, etc). I do not have good places to store this stuff now, and am considering just giving it to a friend or coworker's daughter.

  • This might sound overly simple but every time you start to go through a new space/room/closet/whatever...do the three box technique...throw away/keep/donate (typically there is a sell pile but time isn't a luxury you have so you might identify just a few key things to list on craigslist or whatever)...

Also, any furniture or things that need fixing, just get rid of! Give up on the idea that you'll sew that or hammer that!

  • DH and I have moved a lot in the last 15 years (both military). First, purge anything you no longer want. Second, Identify what you definitely will NEED in the new house since you mentioned moving to a smaller place. Third, do the keep, toss, and donate/sell box sort. Get started early because you may have to do this step a few times. Also, get whatever you are not keeping out of the house as soon as possible so it doesn't accidentally get packed to move. We usually have a weight limit when we move so we are pretty good at purging with every move.
