We are looking at going to DC at the end of April and are starting to look at places to stay. What are some decent areas to look on a budget? Easy access to DC is ideal, we don't need anything fancy in a hotel, just somewhere to sleep.
Re: Washington DC
I live here, so I don't really have specific hotel recs, but I would recommend staying in either Alexandria, VA or Bethesda, MD. Both are on the metro lines, pretty close and easy access to DC (though Bethesda is much further from the DC airports). They both have decent shopping, restaurants and bars, too if you want to spend a day outside of DC.
I know there's a Hilton right off the King Street metro in Alexandria that's pretty reasonably priced. I've never stayed there, but attended a class recently with a lot of people who stayed there and they really liked it. It's literally steps from the metro station, and not too far to shops and things on the waterfront. And only a couple of stops from DCA airport, which is super convenient if you're flying into/out of there.
We stayed here for $99/night (in Aug of 10)...it was perfect for us b/c the metro was right out the door.

ditto
also, there are a lot of kimpton hotels here and they often have deals. i especially like the kimpton palomar in dupont circle.
Before booking check your dates at wmata.com. Metro does a lot of track work on weekends and sometimes stations are closed or lines single-track adding 30-60 minutes to your trip.
They list all upcoming track work for the next few months so it's easy to see whether staying in a particular neighborhood will be a problem.
ETA: I just looked at the site and there will be no blue line service b/w Pentagon and Rosslyn the last two weekends in April. I would NOT stay at a blue line only stop in VA during that time.
another ditto and another reason i'd stay in DC instead of outside the district. there will be better bus options and if you need to take a cab, it will be cheaper.
We stayed here: http://www.melrosehoteldc.com/
Just a 5 minute walk to the Foggy Bottom metro station. There is a Trader Joe's across the street and its a short walk to Georgetown. Our hotel room was HUGE and they allowed us to check in very early since we took the red eye into DC. I would totally stay there again without hesitation.
Agree with this...I have photos and info in my blog (link below).
