Question for those that know about Broadway Re: Wicked

I've never been much of a theater person but for some reason, I have an obsession with the Wicked. I don't know why but I do. I was listening to the soundtrack in the car this morning on the verge of tears. For some reason, the music and the show speaks to me in a visceral way. I've seen it twice and look forward to seeing it again.

So, back to my question - I have two daughters and I have this grand dream of taking them to see Wicked when they are older (probably in about 8-10 years). I think about this every time I listen to the music in the car. So, I wanted to know if Wicked will still be around in 8-10 years? I know that certain Broadway musicals like Cats are long-running but will Wicked be the same way? I don't care if I we have to go to another city to see it because we can make a vacation out of it. I was just wondering because if it's not going to be around, then I need to start the process of letting go of this dream I have.

  • it has already been on broadway for 7 years. my guess is that if it goes away, it would come back and/or there will be another tour.

  • I agree with Cheeky. Even if it leaves Broadway by then (probably likely), I would bet that there will still be a touring company every once in awhile.
  • Okay thank you for the reassurance. I was feeling so sentimental this morning while listening to the soundtrack. This is something I will definitely want to do with the girls when they get older. As long as I can find it somewhere in the US, then that will work for me.

  • I don't know that it will last another 10 years, but then again, I wouldn't have pegged Phantom to STILL be running (gag).

If it does close, I would be surprised if there weren't any touring productions around. The good news is between DC and Baltimore the likelihood of a touring company coming close to us is very good!

This exactly.  My BF works for a major touring company in Manhattan and these are the types of shows that may close on Broadway, but will tour for many years.  I mean, I can't guarantee it, but I see this one having some lasting power.
