On Sunday when I woke Charlie up from his nap I noticed that he had a little rash on his belly. It kind of looked like a heat rash, so I didn't give it a second thought. I hadn't seen him naked in a couple days (DH had been bathing dressing him) so I don't know how long he had had it and DH didn't even notice it on Sunday when I pointed it out to him.
Last night it looked to me like it had spread a little bit. A couple of the spots are also starting to look a little crusty. After his bath I marked each spot with a washable blue marker so that I could see for sure if it was spreading. This morning when he got up there were four new dots without marker. Charlie is also starting to notice them and touch them so I am thinking they might be starting to get itchy. He has no signs of them anywhere else except he has a couple spots on his cheeks (face--- not butt).
He hasn't eaten anything odd, no new clothes, no change in detergent, no change in bath lotions or shampoos.
I am starting to suspect that he has chicken pox. He has had the vaccine--- but is it crazy to think he could still get them? I am freaking out a little bit because DH has never had them and of course Miles is so young. His teacher at day care is watching the rash today and her reaction when she saw it could be described best as "awkward". I told her that I would keep him home if she thought I should and she said that he was ok to be there but she thought it looked suspicious too.
Anyone with rash experience? Am I overreacting to a simple rash?
Re: BWLO- rashes
You should Google classic childhood rashes or something like that. There are 5 or 6 that are very common.
We thought Jane had Fifth Disease recently but it turns out it was Roseola. Dr. Google for pics plus a quick call to the Pedi diagnosed it. There is nothing you can do for it, blah blah.
So, yea, I'd Google around and look at pics. Did he have other symptoms?
No other symptoms that we "know of". He has been a little cranky lately, but we have chalked it up to his age and the new baby rather than actual malaise.
Dr.Googling hasn't helped me much. The roseola bumps look too little, speckled and dense compared to what he has. Same with fifth disease, heat rash and scarlet fever. The closest pictures I can find would be hand, foot and mouth--- but he doesn't have the bumps in any of those locations, only belly and cheeks.
So much for my idea. I know our Pedi likes to see a rash if it's not clear what it is (Jane's roseola was text book - spiked fever, break out in rash, etc). We went once and it was a yeast infection - I thought it was a rash. So, you never know.
Hope it goes away soon and that it's nothing.
Trickey--- that link is great--- although scary as heck, the only one that looks like what he has is the chicken pox. GAH. I'm going to just have to make an appointment just for peace of mind!
Hey, Zac so gets a rash like that, I always thought it was heat rash or rosacea, but according to the pictures it looks like Fifth Disease. Crap, now I'm worried.
When he gets worked up (either hot, or crying) he breaks out in a rash on his cheeks that can last for minutes or hours. Hmm, may have to mention that at his 2 year well visit next week.
Fifth disease is caused by a virus so it's probably not that if he gets it when he's upset.
Maybe its just like baby rosacea or something - I get super red when I'm hot, mad, crying, drunk, etc.
Not that I hope Z is ever drunk, lol.
C has eczema (or at least I thought it was eczema until looking at Trickey's link and now I question ringworm). Anyway, it definitely gets worse on his face when he is hot or pissed off.
To OP, I would get it checked out just in case. If it is chicken pox, you need to know so that you can keep him away from your DH and other LO.
