I think I'm going to go see it. I'm absolutely NOT a horror-film type of person, and I never watch scary movies. But after reading a lot of reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, I'm going to do it. And it's because of the negative reviews rather than the positive ones!
It seems that 95% of the poor reviews are because it wasn't scary enough for people [because it's strictly a ghost story]. I think this person who commented on one of the negative reviews sums up our day in age pretty well:
"It seems that as soon as the movie started previewing in America, the negative reviews came in. I am really not surprised. We're used to horror films that have blood, gore and a monster in them. It's like we're desensitized to anything else. So, for a horror movie to not have a monster, blood or guts-and only gives you freaky chills, it's like it's nothing."
No blood, no gore? That sounds like my kind of scary movie!
Re: The Woman in Black, anyone?
I am not really into scary movies, blood or not but this movie scared the crap out of me. My friend dragged me to see it and my hand pretty much was over my face most of the time, ok well not most of the time. From what I saw, it was a good movie.
The only thing that ruined it for me was the screaming girls.

It was very well done. I didn't feel "scared" at any point, but it was very creepy. and there were a lot of moments where the director was doing something over in the corner but wasn't pointing the camera at it, unlike most movies which tend to say "LOOK OVER THERE!! DO YOU SEE THAT???". it was more like "hey, nothing to see here. wait, is that something over there? ARGH!"
I went to see it with my sisters and at one point one of them screamed so loudly that the entire movie theatre burst out laughing, so there are some "gotcha" moments.
I saw this last night and I really liked it. I love true scary movies (not blood and guts scary) and this was perfect. It was suspenseful and creepy.
My biggest concern going in was that I would spend the whole time thinking, "HARRY POTTER!!" in my head. lol But Daniel Radcliffe did a wonderful job.
I think it helped with the creep factor I went on a weeknight. There weren't very many other people in the theater.
Snow!

I know, I almost just gagged too!
I spent maybe a good 5 mins thinking, "hey it's Harry Potter" but then it went away as the movie went along. He did well in this movie.
