OD: Dexter or Emma

Which did you prefer? Did you like them both? Dislike them both?

Re: OD: Dexter or Emma

  • I definitely like Emma better if forced to choose but I still found her obnoxious at times.

Dexter seemed to have no redeeming qualities, aside from being handsome and occasionally funny if those count, and I liked him less and less as the story went on. He never once made a positive change for himself. Others always had to do it for him, and the fact that he couldn't hold himself together for his daughter when Emma died made me want to scream. I think I was supposed to feel sorry for him, but I just disliked how spineless he was without her to keep him focused.

  • Dexter really was not a very likable character.  I was annoyed that he was who was left at the end.  He was an okay guy in the beginning....not great, but he had his moments.  His most redeeming quality was the fact that Emma seemed to sense something worthwhile about him.  But watching him in his downward spiral that was never-ending....I just lost all patience.  How much bad stuff has to happen before you can pull yourself together?  And then the only reason he seemed to stop ruining this life that had been handed to him on a silver platter was that he married Emma.

  • I definitely preferred Emma although I feel like I started to dislike her closer to the end. The only time I really "liked" Dexter through the entire book was the letter he wrote to her about joining him abroad and them being together. But with the fact that he never actually mailed it (or apparently felt no need to figure out what happened to it) just killed that moment. I mean, I get that if the letter was sent, there would be no more point to the book, but still. Disappointing.

Other than that, there was no redeeming qualities in Dexter for me. I was even annoyed with how he fell in love with Sylvie. He is supposed to love her and even being introduced through his eyes, she still came off as terrible from the start. And I kept thinking "THIS is the girl you want to express you love for? Seriously? Emma never made you want to say I love you but this girl does?" Ick.
