Tongue Tied

she was checked by the nurse and so far she's clean, so yippee.  we had "the talk" with grace about sharing hats and playing with people's hair and all that.  then i told her that not only has she had it but she gave it to me, so don't make fun of whomever has it.

blech.

Re: hooray! lice paperwork sent home!!!

  • yuck. i was told to keep Ava's hair in pony or pig tails as often as i could and to not wash it every day - apparently lice like free flowing clean hair/scalps.

hope it stays away from your home!

  • Ick! Lice freak me out. Not looking forward to that.

  • I found out this weekend that friends around the corner from us had it. Well only mom and daughter of couse. The dad and their son didn't. She said there were 4 cases in her daughter's kindergarten class. The one thing that pissed her off was that the school was still keeping jackets hanging next to each other, not bagged.

  • Ugh...I'm sorry!  We learned yesterday it's in our daughter's daycare class, too.  I'm pissed because they let the child back in without anyone checking him, saying just that the parents gave him a treatment over the weekend and now he's back.  Seriously?

Well when Teagan had it I needed to get a note from the ped saying she was nit free and the ped was telling me how that is just not necessary and nearly impossible to guarentee.  If they did a treatment, bagged things as needed, and do another treatment in a week (or 2 I forget?) like you are suppose to do then it's fine.  We still needed the 2nd treatment to totally get rid of it even though I picked through her hair like crazy because my hair was so difficult for DH and some nits got missed of course.  No one else in her class got it.

So letting the kid back anytime before the 2nd treatment is the same risk no matter how well you think they've been checked.

  • The boys school sent home paperwork too. The CDC is saying it's crazy this year b/c of the weather (warm/cold). I was told that if you use hair spray/gel that the lice don't like that. They like clean hair. I also purchased a repel shampoo in hopes of nixing the problem before it starts.

If the kid had 1 nit left after the treatment, it wouldn't hatch for around a week anyway. This is why a 2nd treatment is done in 10-14 days. Because the nit would be live by that time but not mature enough to lay eggs.

What are they supposed to do? Keep kids out for the full 2 weeks?

Yes, dealing with lice is a pain in the a$$ but there are a lot worse things that kids could be passing around.

  • I've never heard of so much lice in my life! It is constantly in the elementary school here and then in my neighborhood. It's really a matter of time in my house I think

this.  when grace had it the first time (which she got from her class but we were never told about it being there) i told them, did the treatment, kept her home a day and sent her back in.  the second time she got it (again from school and again, no note) i was so pissed i didn't bother telling them.  no one ever told me about it so i said f*ck it.

  • Ugh that went around G's class in October. I was freaking out because I was 37 weeks pg. We used the fairytales products as a preventive measure.

  • I guess I'm on the convervative side of things.  I always keep my kids an extra day, at least, for everything.  Even though it makes my life hell with work.  And I know teachers and parents with kids in other schools where they have stricter policies (like no school for at least three days after treatment), even though it's possible they can come back after that time, given the incubation period.  Hope everything is cleared up soon.
