Things that make you reminisce

They say memory is most tied to smell but I  think it's sound for me. I just heard the Cranberries "Linger" and was immediately transported back to see myself wearing my favorite maroon paisley baby doll dress and Doc Martens. Ahhhh, the good times. So, what's yours?

Re: Things that make you reminisce

  • used to listen to that cranberries album while i played solitaire. it was relaxing. lol!

things will sneak up on me and make me have a flood of recollections. Yesterday i got a card in the mail from my aunt that included some pictures of my grandpa and my dad in 1953, my grandpa is playing the guitar and my dad has a little kid guitar, just like alison and derek. and then i started remembering how my dad got me a guitar when i was little and we would do the same thing, and i wanted to go digging to find a picture so i could frame all of these kid-and-dad guitar moments.

songs, objects, smells, sounds, places, people. i never know when i'm going to be beaten over the head with ancient memories.

  • I just posted a few of these on FB the other day:

OMD's "If You Leave" is always associated with Pretty in Pink in my mind, much like "Linger" reminds me of the movie You've Got Mail and how my BFF and I used to listen to that soundtrack on repeat.

"I'll Be" reminds me of Dawson's Creek and my BFF who died her junior year in high school.  I was visiting her in Indiana (on August 11, 1998) and was spending time with her and her male BFF (Dawson, if you will) who was completely in love with her.  He and I were in one room and ended up goofing off and wrestling (the clothed kind), that song was playing, he bent down to kiss me and she walked in.  The three of us were never in the same room, at the same time, ever again and it caused a large rift in our friendship.  When she died, I went to Indiana for her funeral and walked into this completely packed, silent church and that song was echoing through it.  The guy (Brian) walked up to me, asked me to sit with him in the front row with the pallbearers and we just held hands and sobbed.

It was also the name of the book I wrote.

Another one I have is "San Dimas High School Football Rules" by the Ataris and how everytime I hear it, it reminds me of being 16, drinking in a parking lot before a ska show and skanking with my other friend.

  • I have a perfume I wore when I was hitting the bars a lot and now whenever I smell it on someone, it's like it's 10pm on a Friday and I forget I'm on the train to work.

  • Everytime I hear Sublime and 311 I am brought back to happy times in high school. A few months ago a woman at the mall walked past me and her perfume reminded me of my 1st grade teacher and nice grade school memories. I met H in the fall and the leaves starting to change and the first sweater day always make me think of that time.

Coley- You wrote a book?! I am impressed.

  • Moo just reminded me that Drakkar instantly makes me horny.
  • When I listen to Jeff Buckley, I think of New Mexico. I lived there for a month, and used to drive around in the desert and listen to his CD. The songs "So Real" and "Dream Brother" bring me back to the desert even if I hear it on the subway in the city.....which is a VERY good thing when I'm crushed between the chick listening to trance music and the wall street man leaning his newspaper across my back. lol.

For smells, hmmmm....Cool Water cologne makes me think of my first boyfriend, as does CK1. lol. And in a sad way, I think of my grandfather who died of lung cancer whenever I smell a cigarette.

Polo Sport does that for me.

  • Jack Johnson always reminds me of studying for the Series 7 and the guy I was dating at the time, eHarmoNeil, for obvious reasons.

  • Lightning Crashes by Live and Desperately Wanting by Better Than Ezra will instantly take me to high school.

OMG I had the worst dates from eHarmony.

Have you ever seen the MeHarmony parodies on SNL?

  • That Jump! For your Love song immediately takes me back to the 6th grade camp talent show where I was doing a tap dance to a mashup of that and a few other songs, froze, cried and rand off stage.

OMG yes. The love of my life in high school (who stupidly never realized we were meant for eachother)  wore Polo Sport. One sniff still makes me all weak in the knees, aingsty, and ready to jump the next available man.

  • Stay by Lisa Loeb brings me to freshman year of college driving around in my roommates electric blue car, all over Mercer County NJ just singing and getting lost. And going to her dad's tractor shop so I could see tractors since I thought she was goofing when she said her dad sold tractors.

YES! Yeah, not the best dating pool. Neil was promising but wouldn't put out, and was weird about it. I had one other match who stuck with the whole thing until we were able to speak on the phone just so that he could tell me how much he thought I sucked. I was all, 'really buddy? Was that the best use of your time?'

  • Matchbox 20's first album reminds me of my BFF picking me up from school (she went to Catholic school) and us driving around and winding up at the mall every afternoon.

  • Is anybody else being compelled to pull up a 90s radio station now?

  • The biggest one that comes to mind is Mmm mmm mmm mmm by the Crash Test Dummies.  In an instant, I'm back in the garage of the house I grew up in, listening to the cassette over and over with my brother and our friends.  And we had dance contests.  Keep in mind this was mostly pre-teen boys.

  • "I'll Be" reminds me of my first major HS boyfriend, who was my Dawson.

My second major HS boyfriend wore Polo.  During our first semester of college, when we were trying to make our long-distance relationship work, he sent me a letter sprayed with his Polo, and I sent him one back sprayed with Clinique Happy.  I AM CRINGING SO HARD AS I TYPE THIS STORY.

  • I forgot about Curve. It was one of the few 90s perfumes that didn't give me a migraine.

exclamat!ion LOL and TRIBE! Those perfumes take me to middle school where I used FAR too much and bought a lot of that bright red covergirl lip stick that came with the prepper, powder and shimmer and you had to use one brush so it would just get all goopy after the first use.

    Ahhh those were the days.

  • I was an Obsession for Men girl.  It's been so long since I've smelled that cologne...I wonder if it would still cause a stirring in my girlparts.

The song Baby Got Back always reminds me of my friend Christy and the summer we spent hanging out eating Twinkies, drinking Slurpees, walking a million miles to the bus stop by the hospital and doing stupid things like clapping for anyone we saw who came to a full and complete stop instead of rolling through.

The B52s remind me of my friend Virginia and all the time we spent listening to that CD while jumping on the trampoline in my backyard.

  • Ants Marching always reminds me of being in the all dudes school where most of my guy friends went, and one of them playing that song on his acoustic guitar in the theater as we were doing stage crew stuff for a show and a bunch of us jamming to it. That same guys' school had an acapella choir that my friends were in and they sang Carry On My Wayward Son in one of their shows. I remember being at one guy's house and he played it on the piano with some of the dudes standing around singing it.

  • The sound of zippers remind me of camping every summer for a week in July with my Dad's side of the family.

Hearing any boy bands of the late 90s- early 2000s transports me back to middle school in the back seat of the car between my twin sister and my sister who is 18 months older than us telling our parents to switch the radio station from the oldies to whatever station had the current popular music.
