Moving tips... HELP, ladies!!!!
Hello everyone. How are y'all doing this morning?? I would really need some help and tips about moving and what to do before the movers come. DH keep telling me that it's going to be fine but unlike him this is going to be my first. I have never moved to a different state. We live in Washington State right now and moving to Little Rock AFB in a few weeks. We are excited about this but it's a little bit overwhelming. So, ladies, I would love to hear your tips and suggestions.
Have a great day, everyone!!!!
Just a couple of things to add, we don't have kids(yet) and no pets either.
Re: Moving tips... HELP, ladies!!!!
I changed my name
My biggest tip would be to get yourself SUPER-organized.
Make a list of things that you DON'T want the movers to pack. If they see it, they'll pack it. This should be anything you plan to take with you in your car, including important military and personal documents, laptop if you have one, your purse (yes, movers will pack this), family photos, any heirlooms or things of great sentimental value that can't be replaced, and whatever you think you'll need to get you by in TLF or your first few nights in your house until you get unpacked (air mattress? one set of linens/towels? one lamp?)
I've had pretty good lucky with just taking everything that doesn't get packed and putting it into ONE room, then taping the door shut (like a crime scene I guess!) with big signs saying "DO NOT PACK ANYTHING IN THIS ROOM". You could do the same thing with a closet, etc.
Also, do NOT let movers leave clothes in your dressers while moving them. It makes the furniture heavier and more likely to get dropped and damaged. I've even had movers try to wrap my flatscreen TV in a blanket and leave it INSIDE THE TV ARMOIR to be moved. No kidding. You have to watch some of these guys.
Movers will disassemble your furniture if needed, but I find them very unreliable with keeping all of the pieces and fasteners together. For things like bookshelves they'll try just leaving the plastic bracket things in there, and they WILL fall out and get lost. So I like to take all shelves out of bookcases, and put the brackets in a baggie (taped to one of the bookcases) before the movers get there. I would also watch very carefully when movers disassemble stuff and be ready with baggies for them to put the fasteners in.
Keep a tool set with you.
better yet keep some extra screws and nails with you as well.
Keep your Modem and Wireless Router with you JIC you make it before your stuff. I didn't and our stuff was delayed a week- long wait w/out internet access.
We were warned by USAA and the AF to hand carry certain items that are high value and easy to conceal. (ie. Video Games, DVDs/BluRays, Computer Games... Video Cameras etc.)
I would also hand carry important docs like passport, SS card, vehicle titles, birth certificates JIC something happens.
This. We do this even as civilians now.
