Baltimore Sun releases teacher salaries
Did anyone else see this? The Baltimore Sun released all of the Baltimore County and Baltimore City teacher salaries yesterday.
I was out with a few teachers last night and a non-teacher mentioned it and they went nuts.
I can't even imagine how potentially awkward this could be at work. I wouldn't want to know what all of my co-workers were making, but on some level I would want to know. If that makes any sense.
How about you? Would you want to know how much your co-workers are making?
Re: Baltimore Sun releases teacher salaries
Someone's getting a little brother!
I think its annoying and makes it seem like teachers are the problem.
Are they also publishing the superintendent and other officials salaries as long as the perks they get and their retirement and deferred compensation packages?
My MIL's salary is published which is fine, but they don't publish how much of a budget she got to re-do her office (which was sort of ridiculous and unneccessary) but yet, budgeted, so she spent it.
As a taxpayer, you have the right to know where you money is being spent. I can see why people get up in arms about it but it is what it is. When you work for the government, it's public record. You don't see people getting up in arms about their legal matters being able to be seached for or property taxes being able to be pulled up. I'd be way more upset about someone finding out I had 3 DUIs (hypothetically) than I would my salary.
As a government employee, meh, like a PP said, you kinda know what your coworkers make because of the grades/steps and the salary scale.

Are teacher salaries based upon years of service + education? I ask because I was under the impression that it was pretty straight forward, and wasn't merit-based or anything of the sort. If that's the case, then it's not as though you're going to look up a co-worker and think "UGH, I can't believe she makes more than me!" because it's going to come down to facts, not because she had the forethought to negotiate a higher salary or because someone likes her better.
If I'm wrong about the standards for teachers salaries, then ignore everything I said above and my apologies for sounding like an idiot ;-)
Aside from all of that, though, I do agree with PPs: as a gov't employee, it comes with the territory.
As someone who's only worked in the private sector, my salary has never been published. And while I agree that my salary is no one's concern, I don't know that I'd be bothered by it being available for search. And yes, I'd certainly want to know what my co-workers made. I'm constantly wondering what the standard is for my position, experience, etc. (yes, I do know about Salary.com). I'm not worried if someone's making X amount more than me, I just think it would be useful to know what the standard is.
This is why I'm curious. Salary.com makes my salary sound way off, so I'm always curious if my salary is off or Salary.com is. No way to know

My mom, husband and MIL all work or worked for the Carroll County Public School system. They have been doing this annually for years. Everyone's salary fro the Superintendent to the janatorial staff is made public.. As another poster stated it is all a matter of public record because they are public employees.
There was a big to do several years ago because they Carroll County Times figured out that one guy at Central Office was doubling his annual salary by working so much overtime.
do they also release administrator salaries?
From what I saw, yes.
... every single day of forever.
It always used to be this way in the city, but it changed a year or two ago. Now you don't automatically get your step increase, you have to be rated proficient. Instead of the different pay levels being based on education there are new levels, that allow opportunity for a huge salary jump, but I think people know which teachers in their schools are on which track.
Sorry if I didn't explain this well. I have been on leave since it was implemented.
Personally, I don't care that it is published, but do care that it lists me as having been paid for the last two years, which isn't true.
They are in there as well.
5 cats. 1 baby.
yeah I think this is pretty par for the course. There are databases out there where you can search for most public employees (including me lol). The Baltimore Sun link will let you see the police salaries etc etc. I think transparency with public salaries is important.
