tax related poll

Did you do "better" on taxes as a married couple or as a single?

I got screwed on taxes as a married ( I can think of two good reasons why). I'm happy to file single again this year!

Re: tax related poll

  • I have yet to file this year but suspect I will do just as well single as married.  XH and I had lived abroad so we were within the foreign income tax exemption during our marriage.  That reminds me that I need to do my taxes this week!

  • yea me too :)  I keep putting off printing all my stuff.   I'm petrified of doing my taxes TBH. But that is why I pay a family friend to do it for me and just report back on the damage.
  • Unknown as of yet - 2010 and 2011 aren't "normal" years for me to judge.  2010 I had to pay taxes on the alimony, and 2011 saw the sale of the house.

I assume I'll do a little better as a single for my 2012 taxes.

    This is my siggy.
  • Better this year!!  WAHOO!!  My first year filing single (2010) my company had somehow messed up my withholdings, so I ended up having to pay quite a bit.  This year, I'm actually getting a little refund!

Now on the flip side, our combined income plus the mineral rights XH draws was, oh, about 3 times what I make now.  I miss the money, but I'm so much happier now.

  • better but only because I have my son. I always file head of household so it never really hurt me.

Me too!  Mind you, we only filed 2 tax returns together, but we owed both times.

As a single person I always get a refund Smile

  • I had a great return while married, but I think that's mostly becaseu XH was in school and could write off  tuition or interest on SL's or something like that? I got screwed last year (the first year of being divorced) but should get a small return this year...

  • I honestly don't know yet, but I'm hoping for a refund. This is my first year filing single and it wasn't a normal year income wise, so I'm not sure what to expect.
  • Last year was my first year filing single again but it was not a normal year for my income and I ended up owing a fortune.  Did my taxes this weekend and I am getting $2k back!  So happy.... was hoping to break even since I can't file HOH, deduct my son or his childcare expenses this year (we take turns deducting him every other year even though he never even sees his dad!  ugh)
  • Well...I ran basic numbers on turbo tax and it says I am getting 700 back from the feds and owe 200 to the state. That is without accounting for SL interest and some other things.

So I hope it is right...I will say that is pretty close to a wash (in my book) and I'll take it.

  • Definitely did better married due to the house and the ex only having a home office that we could deduct as well as DD.  The first year we had our house and DD was born I think we got close to 12K back.

  • I did just as well single and married, however, I did better when I owned a house!

They see us rollin'...they be hatin'.
  • It depends on how you look at it. We always got a great refund while married because I was in school full-time, however, I always got screwed because XH spent the money on stuff he wanted. Now, I'm still getting a good refund and can put it towards anything I want Big Smile

  • I am worse off ... we owned a home and had a small business. Now I have a high income and no deductions :(
  • I seemed to do just as well single vs. married.  We got back double the amount of taxes when we bought a house.  Now that we've moved up to the next tax bracket things got a lot worse.
  • Better as I actually got a refund for the first time since before I was married. We always ended up owing
