Sewing Machine Recommendation?

I'd like to start making a quilt for my son, and others if I really get into it. Does anyone have a sewing machine recommendation for a beginner? I did a search on Amazon and there are SO MANY. I'd like to not spend more than $100 since I'm a beginner.
Also, if anyone has any books or resources for beginning quilters, I'd appreciate that as well!

Additionally, find a sewing machine dealer and/or a sewing/vacuum shop and ask about used machines that they have available. I have a love of vintage machines (my favorites being the all metal ones from the 70s) and found my first machine for $100.
