glee 2/7 probably spoilers.

No me gusta.  Sorry I had to :)

Re: glee 2/7 probably spoilers.

  • Ricky Martin = muy caliente
  • It was ok, underwhelming..but ok

  • Maybe it's just me, but it looked like Jane Lynch had work done.

  • the pamphlets cracked me up, but otherwise this episode did nothing for me, I fast forwarded through most of the songs.

  • nene is killing me as the swim coach...i love it.

and i'm SO glad santana said something to shue...because for real? a bullfighter uniform?

  • The Sue-having-a-baby story line is really awkward. I think they're trying to get emotional/serious with it, but it isn't working for me.

So will Ricky Martin now appear in more episodes since he's a teacher at the school?

  • I loved Ricky Martin. I loved "I'm Sexy and I Know It" and "La Isla Bonita", but nothing else was great. I think it's admirable that Santana is standing up for her education and calling a lackluster teacher (though I love me some Shue) out on his inadequacies.

I hate Nene Leakes with the passion of a thousand fiery suns, so I was tired of her character the moment she appeared and I cannot wait for her to go the eff away.

The Sue having a baby storyline is odd. I did think what she said about Shue to Emma was sweet.

I love Mercedes and Sam together and it made me sad when she walked away with her boyfriend.

I'm glad the Glee club appears to be against the Finchel wedding, 'cause that's one of the dumbest things I've ever heard.

I didn't think the episode was an incredible one in terms of moving the storylines forward, but Ricky made it fun for me.

    Yes this exactly

  • The pamphlets were the best.  Coach Beiste had me laughing.  The rest of the episode was meh.  I make my DH suffer though this show with me and tonight when Mercedes started singing he said, "She has the best voice."

  • There were some good lines here and there, but overall the storyline was meh.

Do high school teachers in the U.S. get tenure?  I thought that was only something that happened at college/university.  That confused me.

    Anniversary
  • The tenure thing was super weird. Our high school teachers don't have any kind of tenure. Maybe at a private school they do, but McKinley is supposed to be public, so I really don't get that.

I liked La Isla Bonita, and Santana standing up for her heritage. Her face when Shue was singing La Cucaracha was hilarious.

Overall though, the episode was just ok. The whole Sue wants a baby thing is just weird to me.

  • I could not stop giggling when Bieste said "I was telling my Cooter..."

    Clearly I am a 12 year old.

All of this. I loved the music, but not most of the show. DD and I danced to a lot of it last night.

  • I was also confused about Schue randomly changing from a Spanish teacher to a history teacher. Does he have his license to teach history and Spanish? Seemed strange to me.

  • I was excited when I saw the mariachi on stage but no mexican songs were performed... :(

  • Emma needs to leave Shue. He is a jerk to her.

THANK YOU!!!!! I am not the only person who thinks this!!! Shue is often mean to her. Yes, he does things to make up for them later, but it isn't cool.

  • Overall for me it was: Indifferent

But I do like Ricky. And the pamphlets. And while I can't stand Nene IRL/on Housewives (I refuse to even watch this season) I find her character entertaining.

And.... I kinda sorta fell in love with Santana during La Isla Bonita. Embarrassed

  • I usually try to let teacher things go because, you know, fiction.

But this ep killed me.  He's a Spanish teacher because it was the only subject available? Umm, ok, but what are his credentials?  Does he have any kind of endorsement/degree?  And you can't just switch to history in the middle of the year because you feel like it.... the kids' schedules will all change, he hasn't done any planning, and again- what are his credentials?

If people believe this is how it works, no wonder teachers get so little respect. Apparently anyone can do the job. >:(

Tenure is different from system to system.  In Chicago Public Schools teachers automatically get tenure after 4 years.  Having tenure affects the processes necessary to fire you, what happens when your position gets cut (as far as benefits, etc), that kind of thing.  It doesn't guarantee your job, per se.  As far as I know, no school has a limit or specific number of tenure positions available.

I don't know what the rules are for counselors getting tenure, but Emma wouldn't be in the same pool as the teachers.  In most places counselors are considered part of the administration.  (In fact if the principal and assistant principal are out of the building the counselors are often technically in charge).

I was glad Santana called him out, but I didn't think he handled it well (not that he ever does really).

  • My sister-in-law is a teacher, an English teacher.  She was hired to teach English at a public school a few years ago, but as part of that job, she had to also teach Spanish.  She knew no Spanish.  They hired her and had her teach Spanish Level 1 and 2 knowing very well she had no knowledge of the Spanish language.  I had to teach her as much as possible during the summer and she taught herself along the way as much as she could.  The school could care less if she knew the language or not.  So, it happens whether we like it or not.  This is also not a rare occurrence as I know many teachers in NY, MO, and TN that have ended up having to teach a subjects they know little about to fill "gaps."

Doesn't No Child Left Behind require that you have a degree/credential in the subject you teach if you teach high school?

This is true.  But not all schools are in compliance with NCLB.

Schools get points for having teachers that are "highly qualified" (meaning they are teaching something for which they have a degree... you can usually get away with teaching something in the same subject - ie I taught Journalism for a year with no prior experience b/c it's in the English dept, and I have a degree in English - to teach something outside your degree area is asking for trouble IMO)

If your school doesn't have enough points (in that and a variety of other areas) then the school doesn't meet AYP (annual yearly progress). Those schools generally end up getting funding cut and/or shut down and re-opened with new staff.  I can't imagine a school purposely putting themselves at risk like that, but I guess if your funding has already been cut, and you can't afford to hire enough teachers, some of the teachers might end up teaching things they aren't qualified to teach.  It's a catch 22 (one of several problems with the NCLB process).

That said, Lima doesn't seem to have funding problems, from what I've seen with the band and costumes and sets and trips to NY and and and...

    They do in NJ.
