Anyone taken an REI trip?
I'm really really not a package tour person.
But. We want to take a cycling trip through either southern China or south Vietnam and REI seems to be one of the best options. I'm not sure we're ready to do it fully self-supported and handle all of our own equipment and logistics.
Anyone? Am I going to hate my life if I do this?

Re: Anyone taken an REI trip?
Vietnam is my favorite place in the world (just got back from our 3rd trip). I would never use a US based tour company there. Check out handspan or phat tire tours. Both great and probably half the price of REI.
When we were in the galapogos last year, one couple on the tour booked it through REI. Not sure what else they got with their deal, but they were on our boat doing the exact same tour DH and I were doing only we booked directly with the local company. So it wasn't REI run, just REI arranged. FWIW it was a fantastic tour so I'm sure they were happy with it.
Yeah, I've been to Vietnam for work and loved it. What concerns me is the cycling equipment/support. If that's going to be the main focus of our trip I want to make sure we have decent equipment. Vietnam is pretty easy to navigate, but I don't want to have to replace a bike tire or chain in rural Vietnam on my own! Though I'm sure it could be done
That said it's an excellent idea to try to find the local outfitters they use and book directly through them. Shouldn't be too difficult!
Patagonia's easy, I can help if you have question!

I love REI products and their general ethic, so I'm guessing their tours would be good, but I bet they're also geared to a wealthier audience than local tours or even GAdventures/Intrepid which seem to be more backpacker-focused. Totally depends on what you want, but I think PPs had good suggestions with trying to find the local operators.
