Weigh in re: HDTV and furniture

I keep putting off buying a new tv and living room furniture until I buy a place. I'll be in my apartment at least another 1.5 years. My current tv and furniture are perfectly functional, just dated (slip cover on couch). Do I spend the money for some items that will make my apartment more grown-up and homey, or save the money? Tax return would cover half the expense.

Re: Weigh in re: HDTV and furniture

  • That depends...would you continue to use the furniture when you left the apartment? I wouldn't spend money on new furniture if I was only going to be there for a couple of years, but if I planned to use it longer term then yes.

Unless it's from IKEA...that stuff is so cheap I'd be fine with only using it a couple of years.

  • If you do get new furniture, make sure you can cover it so when the movers move your stuff they don't mess it up.

I did the dumb thing of buying furniture for my apartment when I first moved to Chicago and moved the next year. The movers were so rough with my stuff when I moved out to the burbs to go to school that I had all sorts of scratches and scuffs. My TV stopped working when they moved it so good thing I did not buy a new TV.

I am with Otter, if you are going to be in your apartment 2 or more years I say go for it. If not, stick with what you have. You do not want movers destroying your stuff.

  • I am a money saver and tend to keep things until they are almost useless.  Like, I will wear shoes until they have holes in the bottom of the soles before I throw them out.   Also, I am not picky about things like furniture so I did have mistmatched stuff the entire time I was living in apts.

That being said, I would not buy new furniture or a new TV unless you found an exceptional sale on those items that you can't pass up.   More than likely if and when you do get a house you will probably be buying furniture anyhow to fill up the extra space you didn't have before, so I'd rather wait and just do it all when that time comes.

  • If you're truly planning to buy a place in 1.5 years I wouldn't invest in new furniture. You might think that you'll want to keep it in your new place but there's always the possibility that it just doesn't fit right or something.

If you really feel like you need an update, maybe look on Craigslist for something that's nicer than what you have now but cheaper than buying brand new.

  • I have commitment issues when it comes to buying furniture, so I would probably wait on that until I was going to be in a more "permanent" place.

As it is, I've lived in my house almost 6 years (with no plans to move) and still have not managed to buy new couches. The couches I have are OK--they were hand me downs and are not really what I'd pick out but are fine, except for looking a bit worse for wear. I have total sticker shock when it comes to buying a lot of furniture, though.

As for the TV, I guess it depends on how much you want a new TV. That would be something I'd be more likely to buy now, though.
