Luggage recommendations

I need help with luggage recommendations. I'm looking for something larger than a carry-on in the $100-$200 range. It doesn't need to be hard-sided or have any very special features, but the zipper should be durable (I tend to overstuff) and I'd love to be able to get it up and down flights of stairs without giving myself a hernia.

Any favorites? And is there a store or website I should check for good deals? Thanks!

Re: Luggage recommendations

  • Hey. I bought Samsonite pieces in 2006 before our HM. They have the 360 wheels, which are amazing and so smooth. We travel a ton (DH works for an airline) so something really durable was a must-have. My two pieces, have held up so well. No tears. Zippers are still holding strong. When they eventually wear out, I will by new ones with 360 wheels.
  • I really like my rolling duffel from REI.  It's called the Tech Beast but I believe they have a slighter different model out now (we bought ours two years ago).  It's very durable and well-made.  We have the full size version and matching mini one as a carry-on.  The larger one was about $250 I think, but we got it on sale for roughly $190.

We bought the spinner by Samsonite luggage when we went to Italy a few years ago and it was tremendous.  It has logged a lot of mileage now and is still going strong.  The 360 degree wheels really make a difference especially when navigating small aisles.

  • I also like the Samsonite spinners.  I just got my mom a light weight spinner for xmas.  It is definitely lighter weight than mine and easier to lug up the stairs.
  • Thanks, everyone! I like Samsonite, too, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something I should look at. I'll investigate REI as well.
